Though the Amazon description only calls it an audio CD, before buying I looked closely at the cover art to see it was a DVD & CD set of a live 2006 concert from Melbourne, Australia. And indeed, that's what you get, the DVD content in beautiful color and wide screen, in 5.1 or 2 track stereo mixes. This review is of the DVD, I haven't even listened to the CD yet.

Tim Finn, Neil Finn, Noel Crombie, Malcolm Green, Nigel Griggs, and Eddie Rayner look mature - and, maybe slightly mad as well - thanks to Noel's costuming for this tour. I like a band with a uniform: the Beatles in suit and tie, the Ramones in jeans and leather jackets, and the Enz in whatever chaotic fabric Noel could concieve of. This time I think it's sofa upholstery with white piping, which brings to mind perhaps Mozart or colonial English apparel - never mind, it's gorgeous.

Tim leads off the concert with Shark Attack, followed by Poor Boy; Neil then takes lead on One Step Ahead, but his voice sounds ragged. His voice improves to it's usual sweetness by the time he sings Strait Old Line, but before that the band pounds through Nobody Takes Me Seriously, Eddie's lovely instrumental Double Happy, Neil's still-slightly-hoarse-voiced Message to My Girl, Tim's Dirty Creature, followed by Stuff and Nonsense, and Matinee Idyll. Eddie's prelude Pioneer transitions to Six Months in a Leaky Boat - that segue moment sent a chill up my spine. Neil's pop classics I Got You and What's the Matter with You? are brilliantly performed, and the frenzied Enz signature tune I See Red finish the set. The movie-style video then takes us behind the set for a quick break, where it's revealed Eddie's probably had enough grog for the evening, the band then returns for the first encore.

Great to hear these old boys have a good time playing the favorites again, and soounding better than ever - I say HEAR, because my dvd player wouldn't play the dvd disc in this set - after I ran it through the computer, changing it to region 4 (Australia), I got the video portion, BUT, with NO SOUND. The boys looked great iin their hand-made glowinthedark suits and the various stage backdrops and lighting were stunning. The audio disc is five star quality.

This cd/dvd set ought to be mandatorily issued to all Split Enz fans. This was an exhilarating treat for those of us who live out of tour range. Solid performances of a nice chunk of their catalog. A head's up, though, to anyone buying the set used - the first one I got from a reseller was apparently from the initial pressing, which had a manufacturing error on the DVD. That disc stalls, stutters, and finally seizes up entirely when you select "Play All." I would not have known it was the disc's fault if not for luckily stumbling across a thread about the DVD on their fan board. Fortunately, I was able to buy a new subsequent pressing that did not have that error.
