5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent February 22, 2013
For those of you who are familiar with a "Harmony of the Gospels", that is essentially what this book is.

John MacArthur has taken the gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John - as well as some introductory verses from other passages of scripture early on in the book - and put them in chronological order, organized lesson by lesson. The only addition (not to the verses themselves, which are taken from the NKJV) are very helpful study notes at the bottom of each page.

Once you have read the gospels the normal way from start to finish, gospel writer by gospel writer, Matthew to John, the harmony of the gospels becomes an excellent way to see the complete story of the Lord Jesus, from His perfect existence before creation, to His perfect birth and human life, to His ascension to perfect eternal glory. Nothing is left out. I can't recommend this book enough. I plan on ordering more to give away; I highly commend studying the gospels chronologically, and this book makes it simple to do so.

One practical note: This is NOT a complete Bible, it only contains the gospels. If you are looking for a good study Bible, I recommend purchasing a MacArthur Study Bible, which makes a good companion to this (or vice-versa).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Harmony of the Gospels March 21, 2013
Noted pastor, author and speaker Dr. John MacArthur, in his latest book One Perfect Life: The Complete Story of the Lord Jesus provides what can rightly be described as a harmony of the gospels on steroids. Unlike other harmony of the gospel texts such as by scholars such as A. T. Robertson or Stanley Gundry that merely present a side by side comparison of similar gospel texts, MacArthur provides that same approach while also including pertinent Old Testament prophetic texts as they relate to the passages presented.
Such an approach demonstrates the seamless and consistent presentation of not only the biblical drama, but more importantly, it allows the reader to reflect on how the entirety of Scripture portrays a movement towards redemption centered on the coming of the Messiah, his sacrifice, and his return for his bride. Each page of One Perfect Life is brimming with information in the form of footnotes that provide salient and relevant background to the passages contained on that particular page. The quality, depth, and insightfulness of the footnotes is reminiscent of those contained in the Expositor's Bible Commentary series which is well known almost as much for its footnotes as it is for the scholarly exegesis on the passages each commentary in that series addressed.

For example, on the page outlining the passages that speak of Jesus being born in Bethlehem, there is an excellent and thorough footnote on Caesar Augustus. Why would anyone care you might ask about reading a half a page historical overview of Caesar Augustus?

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Evangelism and Discipleship March 20, 2013
I received a complementary copy as an attendee of the Shepherd's Conference, and it is everything I was hoping it would be when I first heard the project was underway nearly 3 years ago. It covers not just the Gospels but also Old Testament and Epistolary passages that have to do with the life of Christ. To me the best feature of the book, and what sets it apart from other harmonies, is the inclusion of the notes from the MacArthur study bible. The linear (as opposed to column) format is also a boon and makes it much more accessible and visually appealing, especially to the new believer.

My only disappointment was the use of the New King James translation. It can be stilted at times and is not as readable than either the ESV or NASB, however using either of these translations would have greatly increased price of the book and possibly priced it out of the grasp of many.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a tremendously helpful resource. March 20, 2013
John MacArthur has compiled the four Gospel accounts into a single harmonious narrative. While most other Gospel harmonies use parallel columns for Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, this one blends them together in one flowing text.

One Perfect Life: The Complete Story of the Lord Jesus is very much in the same vein as Jesus Christ: The Greatest Life - A Unique Blending of the Four Gospels, compiled and translated by Johnston M. Cheney and Stanley Ellisen. MacArthur graciously acknowledged Cheney's work in the introduction. However, I think the differences are enough to merit purchasing both books. Each has something to offer that the other does not.

Cheney's harmony stuck to the four Gospels, but MacArthur incorporated a number of texts from all throughout the Bible. Part 1 of One Perfect Life, "Anticipating the Lord Jesus Christ," provides a survey of the Old Testament, using texts from the Old Testament as well as supporting texts from the New Testament. In just a few pages, it brings together the key passages that describe the creation (including Jesus' work in it), the fall of man, the curse of sin, the need for a savior, and the promise of the coming Messiah. This serves as a wonderful preface to the life of the Christ.

The majority of the book then focuses on Jesus' life as a man on earth. Even in that section, it brings in supporting texts from Scripture outside of the four Gospels. For example, the part where Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper includes text from 1 Corinthians 11:24-25, where Paul recounted a detail not found in the four Gospels.
