Havell does an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere and mechanisms of small towns and rural counties in the Southwest.

Steven Havill's One Perfect Shot is the newest in the Posadas, New Mexico Sheriff Department series of novels. This book, however, is a prequel and introduces newly appointed deputy, Estelle Reyes - now, the main character in the series. This books main character, Bill Gastner, Under-Sheriff and fatherly curmudgeon, is on the hunt for a suspect in the killing of one of the towns long-time residents. The victim, who was sitting high atop a road grader, is killed by what seems like one perfect shot. Gastner and his team of deputies try and tinker together a solution. Its a very good police procedural with the team trying to solve a crime in a small rural town near the Mexican border. So, heat up your green chili burrito and pull up your favorite chair!

Visiting Undersheriff Bill Gastner is like going to an old friends home and settling in for a comfortable visit. This mystery starts by going back and telling the story of the introduction of Estelle and how she became a deputy and her training under Bill Gastner. He details her family history, her demenor and her physical description. Within several paragraphs you feel as if you have known her for years and then he drops you into the mystery. A man employed by the city is working in the streets moving dirt and suddently he is shot between the eyes. The work up and pace of this crime is solid police procedure and although the ending is a surprise there is a sense of satisfaction that case is solved and right is done.

Prequels seem to be coming from numerous successful authors these days. It is a tricky thing to do and, as Lee Child and Nevada Barr have recently showed, can have decidedly mixed results. That is not true in this case as One Perfect Shot: The Posadas County Mysteries works on all levels. The book is not only true to the series as a whole; the book is a very good one.

It is 1989 and Undersheriff Bill Gastner's latest case is a strange one. There is one road grader in all of Posadas county and Larry Zipoli had been using is on an unpaved road on the north side of the small village of Posadas. That was until somebody fired off the shot that punched through the windshield and slammed into Larry Zipoli's forehead plowing deep into his brain. Mr. Zipoli never saw it coming and investigators have no idea when it happened or why.

It is going to be a hard one to solve and a strain on the department's already limited resources and staff. But, unbeknownst to Undersheriff Gastner as he stands in the hot sun surveying the crime scene, Sheriff Eduardo Salcido has hired a new officer contingent on her passing all the usual tests, classes, etc. He seems to have a lot of faith in the person that would be the first female patrol deputy in the history of Posadas county. Her name is Estelle Reyes and from the start it is clear that Gastner and Reyes are destined for many things.

After writing 17 books in this incredibly good series that started years ago with Heart Shot New Mexico author Steven F. Havill takes readers back to before the beginning with his latest book. Once again the small New Mexico county of Posadas and its citizens, more like family you don't see often enough, than fictional characters pull readers into a complex tale of deceit, recklessness and murder.

The newest book in Steve Havill's Posadas County series takes us back to the very beginning of a time line that has tracked through all of the other books in the series. We learn how the major characters come to fit into the story line and some of the other characters are brought into the story as well. Havell does an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere and mechanisms of small towns and rural counties in the Southwest. And his technical information seems accurate as well. This is a very enjoyable book in a very enjoyable series.

Format: Paperback
In 1987 in Posadas County, New Mexico, Sheriff Eduardo Salcido considers hiring nineteen year old Estelle Reyes-Guzman as a deputy. His Undersheriff Bill Gastner agrees to serve as the rookie's trainer and quickly becomes her mentor as he appreciates her energy and intelligence.

Her first major case under Bill's tutelage is the investigation into the shooting murder of county road grader Larry Zipoli while he sat in his vehicle. The evidence points to the deceased knowing his assassin; so the two law enforcement officials look into the victim's wife, neighbors, boss, and construction peers. Bill and Estelle also inquire into the youngsters Zipoli took boating.

The latest Posadas County police procedural is a terrific prequel that focuses on the first teaming of the series protagonists. The case is deftly handled so that the mentor trains the mentee (and readers). Besides a strong timely (with what has happened at Penn State) investigation, the key to Steven F. Havill's powerful thriller is long time fans will see clearly the traits that make Bill and Estelle strong law enforcement leaders and caring family members while newcomers will be introduced to these endearing heroes.

One of the best -- maybe the very best -- in Steven Havill's series of mysteries. Great attention to detail of police procedure and the daily life of residents of the American Southwest. Realistic human motivation, never far-fetched. You'll be half-convinced you've been to Posadas, New Mexico.
