3.0 out of 5 stars Grab bag..., January 10, 2001

DXR "The Eyeful" (San Francisco Bay Area) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One on One (Audio CD)
Both "Love Is Here" and "As You Are", from the classic Pharoah Sanders LP "Love Will Find A Way" are the sole reason I bought this CD. (Alas, the Sanders LP hasn't made it to CD yet, but a 3rd track, also featuring Phyllis, "Everything I Have Is Good", can be found on "Melancholy Fire: The Best Of Norman Connors" CD). These two songs capture a level of skill, imagination and elegance that is obviously missing from most of the other songs on "One On One".

Two show tunes from "Sophisticated Ladies" might be of interest to many Hyman fans. Not this one...

"Maybe Tommorrow" with Levi Stubbs and "Survivor" with Joe Cocker (especially the later) are decent examples of 80's pop rock-n-soul.

"Obsession" with Lonnie Smith is a solid, well-crafted song that has withstood the test of time and should appeal to almost anyone.

A real surprise find for me was "Remember Who You Are", a classic love ballad that fits Phyllis to a tee. Like several of the songs on this CD I'd never heard this one before.

Three songs are mediocre vault material at best. How did Phyllis get roped into the flimsy and tedious "Leavin'The Good Life Behind" or the inane "Do Me" for instance?

"One On One" is a grab bag of disparate styles and uneven quality, but there are some real finds here for the diehard Phyllis Hyman fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars IF YOU LOVE PHYLLIS........, May 29, 1999

Buy this, if only for the very rare recordings it contains. The MUST HAVE on this CD is "Maybe Tomorrow," a duet with Levi Stubbs from the Four Tops. What a combination of soaring vocal talents! This song gives me chills just thinking about it. If you are amassing a Phyllis Hyman collection, snap this one up. It also has cuts from her Tony award-nominated performance in "Sophisticated Ladies." Her voice was born to wrap around the songs of Duke Ellington. If only she had recorded more of them before she took her life!
