As the ongoing adventure-comedy One Piece continues, the Straw Hat Pirates make a typically skin-of-their-teeth escape from the island-fortress of Navaronne with the help of a giant, inflatable octopus. Back at sea, they come to Long Ring Long Land, a circle of linked islets. Everything on these islands grows… long: the apples are shaped like bananas, a dachshund stretches over a mile, and a horse looks like a giraffe. The Straw Hats' peaceful visit turns hostile with the arrival of the Foxy Pirates, an outré crew whose designs suggest the One Piece artists had been watching Yellow Submarine. The leader of the Foxies challenges Luffy's Straw Hats to a "Davy Back" match, a series of bizarre games even less rational than Bill Watterson's Calvinball. The slapstick variations on roller derby, dodge ball, et al. are complicated by the Foxies' cheating and invocation of obscure rules. But the stakes are high: each time someone wins a round, that team gets to take a member of the other's crew for their own ship. If someone loses three games, the team can also lose their Jolly Roger banner, the ultimate shame for a pirate. While they're no odder looking than many of the Straw Hats' previous foes, the Foxy Pirates all have grating, screeching voices, and viewers will agree with Nami when she says, "I've had about enough of that laugh." After the Straw Hats' hard-won victory, the Foxy Captain challenges Luffy to a second match--which he accepts with his usual mixture of unquenchable enthusiasm and blithe stupidity. Nami, Zorro, and Usopp are furious, but the captain calls the shots. Luffy is determined to become King of the Pirates, but he seems determined to get there the hard way. (Rated TV 14: cartoon violence, violence against women, minor risqué humor, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Product Description

Monkey D. Luffy refuses to let anyone or anything stand in the way of his quest to become King of All Pirates. With a course charted for the treacherous waters of the Grand Line, this is one captain who'll never drop anchor until he's claimed the greatest treasure on Earth: the Legendary One Piece! Along for the ride are his loyal crewmates, a wonderfully-bizarre collection of outcasts and misfits from the far corners of the world. 4.0 out of 5 stars The Davy Back Fight August 3, 2012
Format:DVD
After a 16 month hiatus, One Piece is back with 'Season Four: Voyage One', featuring episodes 206-217.
This set starts off the concluding episode of the Navarone arc, which sticks out a bit like a swore thumb as it really should have been included as the final episode of season three (and is the only episode on this set in 4:3); but none the less, it's a great and funny conclusion to the arc. The other 11 episodes cover most of the Davy Back Fight arc; in which the Straw Hats are challenged by the Foxy Pirates to a series of pirate games and challenges where the winner of each round receives a member of their opponent's crew! Sandwiched between Skypiea and Water 7, this is a light-hearted arc that makes a nice contrast to the epic and dramatic arcs that surround it by focusing on the fun and adventurous elements of the series that make so unique and endearing. The antagonist Foxy is a comic villain that hypocritically constantly cheats and rigs the matches, but also is very self-conscious and ridicules any 'dishonor' from his opponents; this creates some nice running gags as well as raising the stakes for Straw Hats. However, the arc does show some seriousness as the Straw Hats realize that they really could lose their cremates. My only complaint is that this sets ending is rather abrupt; ending on episode 216 would have been a slighter better place to finish as it would have allowed the whole final round to be included in the next Voyage.

The two discs are packaged in slimcases, lazily using the template and artwork from season three!
Unfortunately, due to apparent licensing issues, ending 14 has been replaced with ending 15 and neither theme song is dubbed.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Piece is Back! July 25, 2012
Format:DVD
I pre-ordered the set through rightstuf (to get the bonus art book) this is a review of the set and the episodes.

I believe most of the fans already know what's the Davy Back Fight arc is all about. The Strawhats arrive on an island where everything is long and it's called Long Ring Long Land. While on the island a new pirate crew called the Foxy pirates confront the Strawhats and they challenge them to a game of Davy Back Fight. The Davy Back Fight is basically a pirate game where the winning crew's captain gets to choose a person from the opponent's crew to join them.

This set contains the last episode of the G-8 arc (episode 206) and most of the Davy Back Fight arc episodes (episodes 207-217) except the last two episodes which contain the final challenge. I'm not a big fan of the Davy Back Fight arc in the anime. I still think it's good, but it's a lot better in the manga.

I don't own the voyages sets, but after reading some reviews from others about the set, they said that the two slim packs covers are the same as the season 3 sets with the Strawhats jolly roger.

The menu looks great and it's completely different from the past sets. The Funimation dub was also great. The whole voice cast did a great job. The aspect ratio for episode 206 is 4:3 and all the other episodes are 16:9 which looks very good. This contains the usual extras: text-less opening and ending theme songs, trailers and commentary (which we get two of them on episodes 211 and 215). It's always fun listening to the commentaries in my opinion.

The reason I gave this set 4 stars is because the opening and ending themes are not dubbed.

Why not go ahead and do a collection?
The Voyages are for die-hard One Piece fans who are willing to pay a little more for the nicer box art and want to see it now, if you don't mind waiting a little while the collections are for people who want a price drop.

Only eleven episodes?
Actually this set will include 12 episodes (just one less then usual), although two of the upcoming season four sets will probably only include 11 episodes. The only other option would be two 3-disc 15 episode sets, which would be abnormally large. You could wait for collection 9, but season 4... Read more
