4.0 out of 5 stars Good Debut
I've been a fan of Chynna's music for a long time and still listen to Wilson Phillips after all these years. I was a bit confused on the pairing with Vaughan Penn but loved the first song, 'One Reason', after previewing it on their website. I think the music is quite good, but someone needs to tell Chynna Phillips to stop singing with that rough edge ala Janis Joplin that she throws into her vocals...she goes from clarity to that annoying sound with regularity. If her voice were raspy or strained I could see it but it obviously isn't so she does it on purpose. It becomes nerve wracking song after song. Her...

I'm enjoying the album very much but the type of harmony that flowed from Chynna with the Wilson sisters isn't there with Vaughan. I have been a long-time fan of Wilson Phillips & was very excited to learn that Chynna Phillips had renewed her Christian faith-even further elated to hear that she was doing an album of Christian music. I wasn't sure how well I was going to receive the sound of Chynna with someone other than the Wilson sisters, but after listening to "One Reason", I believe the pairing of Chynna with Vaughn Penn is amazing. Their singing styles are diametrical that when combined are perfect. I love Vaughn's raw, edgy sound against Chynna's clear, light soprano. The songs are well-written with consistent themes of forgiveness, redemption & grace. It is a great listen for "seekers" or new Christians as the songs are not preachy, but prayerful. They express the most fundamental of Christian values-love, forgiveness & God's amazing grace. Yet the message of the CD is also a good reminder for the Christian who has been on their spiritual walk for awhile. The song, "One Reason" is the first selection on the CD & is a very captivating tune with a simple, yet vital message to remember to put God first-something I think all Christians struggle with from time to time as we become consumed by the hecticness of everyday life. After hearing, "One Reason", I could not wait to hear the rest of the CD & it did not disappoint. Each song contains a great inspirational message or reminder as to how we are called to live as Believers, beautiful harmonies & vocal arrangements all set to catchy folksy-pop music. I cannot wait to hear more from Chynna & Vaughn!!

Her voice is nice when she just SINGS as she did with Wilson Phillips, the harmonies are tight, and the songs are well written. However when I bought the CD I thought this was a duo. It's clear who is the star of this project. Vaughan is relegated to little more than a backup singer, as Chynna has lead vocals on nearly every song. Chynna's husband Billy Baldwin is executive producer. If I had it to do over again, I think I would have downloaded the cover song "One Reason" which is excellent, and saved my money on the rest of it.

I love this CD! Chynna Phillips is awesome but so is Vaughan Penn! If you want to be uplifted, inspired and filled with spirit, buy this album. The more I listen to One Reason, the more I like it. The lyrics of An Eye for an Eye must have been divinely inspired. Outstanding! Garden Promise is another favorite. Oh, but so are Everyday Miracles and the one with the great beat....truly, amazing redeeming grace. Reminds me of the great music from back in the day with an extra positive message.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chynna & Vaughan [One Reason], October 13, 2009
This review is from: One Reason (MP3 Download)
Chynna Phillips, one third of the pop supergroup Wilson Phillips, announces a new phase in her music career as she joins independently-famed singer/songwriter Vaughan Penn to form the duo "Chynna & Vaughan." The group's debut album titled, One Reason, releases Oct. 6 on Reunion Records, an imprint of Christian music's Provident Label Group. Phillips and Penn first met in 2007 and although their musical career paths were distinctive and unique, Chynna & Vaughan naturally formed a creative partnership based on their passion to share the hope of Christ with a hurting world.

Phillips says, "This is such an important time in my life. Although I did accomplish a lot of the things I wanted to as an artist and songwriter during all the touring, talks shows and the awards as a member of Wilson Phillips, nothing compares to what I'm doing now." She adds, "Nothing is more gratifying as a Christian believer than being able to thread my faith and love for Jesus into my music." Chynna Phillips achieved vast international fame and recognition as a member of the pop sensation, Wilson Phillips. With massive radio hits such as "Hold On", "Release Me", "You're In Love", and "Impulsive", Wilson Phillips sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Yet despite this extraordinary success, Chynna did not experience true joy and peace until she gave her life to Jesus Christ six years ago. Phillips has been married to actor William Baldwin since 1995. The couple have three children: daughter Jameson (born 2000), son Vance (born 2002), and daughter Brooke (born 2004).

"One Reason" kicks it off and I immediately heard that signature vocal style that Chynna made famous as a member of Wilson Phillips and her harmonies with Vaughan Penn are so catchy. I can't get enough of the vocals on this album. The message of the songs is very personal and biblical as they reflect the maturity of a believer who hasn't always known "Jesus tell me again, when's it going to sink in, that You're my one reason". "Everyday Miracles" keeps the harmonies going with the Truth that "I can see a world full of everyday miracles and every day You're making me believe. That in this world full of everyday miracles, Your love surrounds me".

"Something Divine" praises God's "beautiful, amazing, redeeming grace" and has a great harmonica part. Musically the album has a folksy pop style. "Now I Know Your Love" sums up one of the themes of the album "now I know Your love is not to keep, I never knew Your love could do what it's done to me, You meet me where I am doing the best I can, even when the Truth is hard to understand". My favorite song is next, "Eye For An Eye", it has another great harmonica part and these amazing lyrics: "I'm not gonna hate even if I ache inside, I'm not gonna hurt someone even if I'm justified, I'm not gonna lie, even if I've been deceived, an eye for an eye is not the life I choose to lead". What a great reminder as Christians. The rest of the songs are also catchy and filled with great reflections of the joy of walking with Jesus.

One Reason is one of the catchiest albums I've heard this year and the title track "One Reason" had me hooked from the first song all the way through the end of the last song "Take It All". My favorite songs are "One Reason", "Everyday Miracles", "Something Divine", "Now I Know Your Love" and "Eye For An Eye". I've heard every song by Wilson Phillips and Chynna has never sounded better and the collaboration with Vaughan Penn is a match that was meant to be. If you like Tal & Acacia, The Wreckers, and Wilson Phillips then you can't go wrong with Chynna & Vaughan.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Reason Chynna and Vaughan, November 29, 2011

Chynna Phillips has always been one of my favourite singers. she has teamed up with what I would call a country singer, who in this case rules the roost. I am glad she has renewed her faith, but I feel she would have done better alone, or with less influence of her new found friend. There are some really good songs penned by her, but it really is dominated by vaughan Penn.
