5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing album, strong throughout
This album starts out with a Bare-Naked Ladies sounding "So Much Better" and quickly moves to cover multiple musical styles, from an easy listening cover of "Tin Man" to a Matthew Sweet like discordance in "Manhattan". It is amazing when one artist can cover so many styles with such ease and skill. Evan creates choruses in his songs that...

2.0 out of 5 stars evan olson- one room
first let me say i have the respect for evan in that he is one heck of a musician. that being said, he is not much of a songwriter. the songs bounce in between weak and downright silly. Horrible lyrics about "one night flings" and "g strings" make this album unlistenable. it sounds great but there is no substance behind the music. great for teenage girls who don't require...

Evan creates choruses in his songs that draw you in and keeps you humming for days. I've been listening continually for about a week and only find "In You" to be a weak link, while "Falling" and "Timing" are awesome. Great album, well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars amazing-Olson wrote, recorded,produced, mixed all himself!, December 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: One Room (Audio CD)
Obviously a very talented guy- he performs all the instruments, backup vocals, and did all the production himself!

The music is awesome- his voice is good, the guitarwork is competent and fun, lots of catchy beats, riffs, and hooks. His overall sound is rich and deep and attention-holding. Very well done. Several awesome songs, and the rest very good.

The songwriting is great- poetic in parts, thought provoking in others, moving in still others, and smile-inducing in some parts. My only complaint is the 5th song, "Deep In You." A song with such a wham-bam-thank-you-m'aam tone with the chorus about being "up in you" in "the place that's so warm" is a little too irreverent to be played in our family room. Some, like me, may find this song's cheapening of sex too bothersome to be comfortable enough to enjoy the song.

Excellent debut effort from Evan Olson. A rare find these days, in terms of musical ability vs. image. Evan wrote, produced and played all instruments on "One Room".... If you are into positive, uplifting pop-rock, this one's for you. Standout tracks include "Falling", "So Much Better", "Don't Break My Fall" and "A Million Things". The future looks bright for Evan Olson.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, February 4, 2000

I got this one for my birthday from a very good friend. I don't think I'd have heard it if I didn't get it that way. I am in BC Canada and I doubt that it is even available up here. I absolutely loved every song on the CD. I think it's pretty rare when a CD like that comes out, espcially on the first listen. I am sure it will be frequently seeing the inside of my CD players. :) I even sent Evan an email and told him how much I loved the CD and he or someone at the office actually answered me and very quick too. Nice to have that personal touch. This is a must get!

5.0 out of 5 stars EVAN AWESOME!, January 1, 2000

I would say that this album is one of the best alternative rock albums to come out in '99. The songs are quite catchy and infectious. I swear that you'll be humming these melodic songs after you listen to this album. Evan's own version of "Tin Man" is my favorite and it truly surpasses the original version. I can't believe that Evan and Ben Folds were college band mates because their music are very different. Evan's music is very bouncy as against to Ben Folds' melancholic melodies. Wanna feel good? BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Evan-Only Getting Better, April 20, 2002
This review is from: One Room (Audio CD)
I remember when Evan was singing for Bus Stop back in '93. That's when I began digging his poppy/soulful sound. I've followed his progress since then & "One Room" is a great collection of his ecclectic groove. Evan is Greensboro, NC's true pop-star poet. If you dig happy, groovy, fun music, this album is for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome from track to track, March 13, 2000
This review is from: One Room (Audio CD)
Evan Olson's One Room is one of those rare albums that rocks from the first track to the last. It's the kind of CD you can just pop in and not have to worry about skipping through mediocre songs. "Falling," "So Much better," and his version of "Tin Man" will have you singing to yourself all day. Having produced, performed, recorded, and mixed all the songs in "one room," Olson is the record insustry's best kept secret.

This is some of the best music I have heard since the 50's. I hope that he writes more music along this line. His voice is really clear and distinct.

With Evan's 2002 release of "Red" jamming my changer, I thought it'd be a great time to take a look back at this pop gem. "So Much Better" opens with throbbing rhythm guitar and a zombie-like vocal and slashing electric lead to make this a thoroughly addictive track. "A Million Things" has a commercial pop melody on this midtempo track. "We know nothing lasts forever," Evan laments on the joyful, "Falling." The cover of America's "Tin Man" fits like a glove with Evan not straying too far from the original arrangement. "All I want is just to be in you," Evan sings getting to the point on "Deep In You." "Timing" has a great funky beat with a pretty melody that would have been comfortable on the Bus Stop CDs. A woman's voice calls out, "Evan are you sleeping?" on "Manhattan" that sounds like the soundtrack for a fast-paced dream. "Easy to Leave" shimmies with more rhythm than melody. "One Day" is a happy love song that'll have you slappin' your thigh. "There's a fire in my soul I can hardly control all I know is what's got to be," Olson croons on the pulsing "What's Got to Be." "Don't Break My Fall" has chiming guitars like the Byrds or Tom Petty. The CD concludes with "One Room" that is bright joyful pop. U snooze U lose with this release! Don't miss it.
