Book Description

November 2000
This is a conversion story like no other. For one thing, it was written before the author was received into the Church. In fact, it is a journal he kept during the year in which he was coming to a decision about whether or not he must become a Catholic. For another, he and his wife were both Congregational ministers, very happily placed in a New England parish. Becoming a Catholic meant leaving a pleasant home, congenial work, and security. He did not know whether his wife would decide to become a Catholic too. She was attracted by the Church but was not approaching it by the same path as he was. Whether she would arrive at the same decision he could not tell. In the face of all that, what made Oliver Barres so certain he must go straight forward into the Church? In his introduction to the book, Frank J. Sheed says of him: "He has a hunger and thirst for reality, for the objective. That a creed stimulates or consoles or quiets the conscience, that it meets one's desires or felt needs -all that is splendid, but secondary. Unless it is true, he will have none of it."

Editorial Reviews

Review

". . . an inspiring story of one couple's journey form Congregationalism to the Catholic faith." -- Most Rev. William McNaughton, Bishop of Inchon (South Korea)

"Barres' account . . . not only brings back a great age of converts, but puts a fresh light on the essential issues." -- Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R.

From the Publisher

Most conversion books contain multiple stories. "One Shepherd, One Flock" contains one, and it's like no other. The first part is taken from the diary Oliver Barres kept before becoming Catholic. You travel with him from disagreement to assent - no other conversion story can match this. The second part defends the Catholic beliefs Barres once found indefensible. With an introduction by Frank Sheed, a foreword by Avery Cardinal Dulles, and a preface by Fr. Benedict Groeschel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique conversion story, March 7, 2005
This review is from: One Shepherd, One Flock (Paperback)
One Shepherd, One Flock is the conversion story of a Congregationalist minister to the Catholic Church. Through his diary, we learn that he has an ardent desire for truth. He addresses such topics as confession, authority, and the countless divisions within Protestantism, to name a few. One Shepherd, One Flock is an outstanding book that makes you want to keep reading to see what finally makes the author convert to Catholicism.

I highly recommend this book because the author's way of thinking makes a lot of sense; he brings up many points that make you nod your head in agreement. He just keeps questioning what is true, and it is interesting to experience his journey to the truth.

I chose this book because Oliver Barres is the father of our new Bishop, John Barres. I can only tell you the apple rolls very close to the tree, both father/mother and son are amazing people. The book has such insight, you will enjoy it and feel blessed from many of the passages...
