Because in jazz's house are many mansions, some of the new music marketed as jazz today stirs debate as to whether or not it really is (jazz), but there is no debate about this one. This is jazz as we understand, and always have understood, it to be. When it is great it is very, very great and when it is merely good it is just fine, thank you very much. The title track (One for Shirley) is the prize, but Cristo Redentor-Calvary, Oasis, Make it Last and Tokyo Girl are right behind. Warfield and Stafford are known - and admired - quantities, but I was not familiar with Pat Bianchi, and he is a real find, very much in the upward and onward organ tradition of Larry Young. Landham gets to show off his drum chops on the opening track and he is hot! No reason to hold back on this one. It delivers!

A Modern Classic,
By
This review is from: One for Shirley (Audio CD)
Man, this album has everything I love about jazz. The classic groove of the jazz organ mixed with the modern melodies of Tim's originals and the classic standards he played with Shirley Scott make for great listening. The soaring voices of the horn solos over a great rhythm section are what this album features. It's very easy to listen to at work, in the car, or at a party. I love this CD.

Awesome- a must have,

I heard the Tim Warfield Quartet perform his latest CD, One for Shirley, live in a jazz spot in D.C. and they were AWESOME. The music was so alive, it was electrifying. I knew that I had to get the CD. I'd never heard them before, but I am DEFINITELY a lifelong fan now. The CD is great, but there's nothing like live jazz.
