'One Simple Word' is quietly sensational, forever grappling with 'Ring' for best Connells album. While I love 'Boylan Heights,' this is better, and saying it's not as good as the fine but flawed 'Fun & Games' (as some have offered) is downright mystifying. The first four songs - 'Stone Cold Yesterday,' 'Speak to Me,' 'All Sinks In' and 'Get a Gun' offer the best start to any Connells album. This is great stuff.

I have been a fan of The Connells for about 10 years or so. I was introduced to them by a friend who heard them around his college, which is precisely the "sound" they had. I think this was their best album, though I like them all. The songs are all well written and catchy with a "power pop" feel. I'll never understand how they didn't become more popular. I highly recommend this disc.

I was a huge fan of the Connells first three albums back in the late 80's, but times and music tastes changed and I passed on getting "One Simple Word" in 1990 when it came out... partly because I was afraid that it might not be as good as the first three, which held such a special place in my life back then. Boy, was I wrong. I recently retrieved my old CD's from storage and while going thru them fell back in love with the Connells albums. It reawakened something in me and I felt the need for more, so I ordered "One Simple Word" a few weeks ago and it hasn't left my CD player. EVERY song is AMAZING! That's not hyperbole. A part of me is sad that this gem hasn't been a part of my life for the last 24 years... but I intend to make up for it. One of the most underrated bands of all time.

This album, along with "Ring" a couple of years later, are hidden gems of college rock that will be worth your while to invest in. Although the band is American and out of North Carolina (I think), the singer's voice is unabashedly polished, and may remind you of "The Manchester Drawl" of Brit-pop bands at the time. However, underneath that voice is a guitar-driven sound that complements the voice greatly and creates songs that are catchy as hell. The title track has all of the pop hooks that will make you wonder why this wasn't a bigger single at the time.
The musical quality of the album is consistent througout. It reconciles a guitar-happy groove (like the title track and the closing track) with acoustic ballads such as "Waiting My Turn" that willfully avoid sappy themes. Even before the musical earthquake from Seattle, groups elsewhere were becoming smarter rock musicians and getting at least some airplay in the "120 Minutes" era of MTV.
It's really hard to place this rock album in context between the post-punk rock in Los Angeles or Minneapolis (which it is not), the hair metal rock (which it most certainly is not), and the grunge-era rock and roll (which the band was too pretty to really become a part of). But if you want to hear smart pop-rock music, contemporary trends be damned, this is worth your while.

i keep reading that a lot of people like Boylan Heights and Fun And Games better than this....i think that's crazy. i own only those three albums by the connells, and One simple Word is easily the most well-rounded and bestest of the bunch. most bestest, that is. george huntley hits the mark a few times here. wowsers trowsers pudding and powseres. i saw them open for the replacements in the early 90's backing this album, though and my friend and i asked each of the band members what their favorite album was of theirs: they were split down the middle pretty much between this and Boylan

I rarely ever write reviews for Amazon, but this is one of the more influential albums I own, and I'm a musician. The guitar sounds on this album are some of the most addictive, brilliant tones I know of; disimilar from anybody I know (maybe it's like the edge from U2?) and the melodies are so catchy. I highly recommend this album to anyone who appreciates great sounding, innovative music. These guys never got the attention they deserved.

This was my first introduction to the Connells. I first got a hold of the album waaaaaaaaaay back when "Stone Cold Yesterday" made it onto the playlists of a few Southern California radio stations. There are very few albums on which I like every song, but this is one of them. The songwriting is excellent, and the music is wonderfully eclectic. It's too mellow for hard rockers, though.

I listened to this on a cassette tape when I was in high school & college (about 1990-1997) & my friends & I loved it. (Also, The Connells Fun & Games CD). I think the best tracks on this CD are is 8-12. Not to say that the first 7 tracks aren't good, but those are my favorites, especially Too Gone, The Joke, and Another Souvenir. These songs bring back memories. Great CD!
