David Whitehouse does a masterful job of presenting intimate details of the "Space Race" and reveals the huge triumphs and deep tragedies along the way. His historical contribution is sorely needed and appreciated.

It was nice to see a book that attempted to summarize the space race by chronicling and providing some insight to the space race. Unfortunately though this book contains much bias in the tone it was written in. Generally when Americans achieved something "they did it right" and the Soviets either "got lucky" or failed miserably.

I couldn't disagree more.

We all know the Americans beat the Soviets to the first man on the moon, but that is just one milestone of thousands in space exploration. The Soviets landed the first probe on the Moon, first pictures of the dark side of the moon, the first unmanned lunar rover, first living things to orbit the moon (they sent some animals).

It's interesting because as you actually read more about space milestones you realize that space exploration is a marathon, not a sprint, and that the Soviets checked a lot more boxes on the list than the US did. Unfortunately David Whitehouse is too blind to see that, and its reflected in this book.

The only reason I give this book 2 stars instead on 1 is that the pictures are nice.
