Book Description

June 22, 2010 4 - 8 years

One Smart Cookie offers a fresh batch of words that encompasses everything you might say to a child, whether it's the first day of preschool or the last day of high school. Cookie-centric definitions range from wanting to know everything about cookies (curious) to thinking carefully about what kind of cookies to make for your friend (ponder). This book mixes Amy Krouse Rosenthal's morsels of wisdom with the delicious illustrations of mother-daughter duo Jane Dyer and Brooke Dyer. This is one vocabulary list that will resonate well beyond the school years.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-2–Who wants chocolate "all-chip-in" cookies? This book uses sweet confections to explore creative ways to approach a challenge, think of others, and work hard. A brief illustrated glossary serves up a batch of essential life lessons through the collaborative activity of making cookies. The words themselves aren't always simple–e.g., "prompt," "organized," "prepared," "compromise," "empathy," "integrity"–but the explanations hit close to the heart and simplify the definition for younger readers. "CONTRIBUTE means you don't just sit back while everyone else makes the cookies; each of us is doing our part and adding something good." Old-fashioned images in bright watercolor illustrations invite readers to look twice: first at the charm of each cookie-baking vignette, and secondly at the detail given children and their animal friends joining in humanlike roles and dress. Cookies tie together the theme of the book; the making of them adds to the sweetness of the message.Mary Elam, Learning Media Services Plano ISD, TX

From Booklist

The fourth book in Rosenthal’s “cookie” series offers a new set of delectable words and defines them with sensitivity to a child’s experiences. In this imaginative, childlike world, “EMPATHY means, Your feelings somehow came into my feelings, and it feels to me like you could use a cookie right now.” Clean, spacious design heightens the powerful charm of the watercolor illustrations, in which serious yet kindly dressed animals share the domestic scenes with children. A treat to be pondered and savored, the book closes with a recipe for “One Smart Cookie,” a Smarties-laden sugar cookie. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

5.0 out of 5 stars start school with One Smart Cookie....... July 6, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
As an elementary school librarian, I have used all the books in this "cookie" series to help children understand the importance of getting along with others and how not to bully. August 9th I'm planning to start school (day 1)reading this new one to classes 2nd grade & up. The vocabulary is easy to understand when related to cookies and the illustrations just couldn't be more delicious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book - gorgeous expressive illustrations October 19, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
If anyone wants a book that will help improve vocabulary for a child along with entertaining her at the same time I highly recommend this book. I purchased two for my granddaughter and one for my niece. They are beautiful books about making cookies and learning the meaning of words about ones feelings, emotions, character, etc at the same time. The illustrations of the expressions of the emotion, etc., are excellent!
