This Novel is Overflowing with God's Love!, March 12, 2010
This review is from: One Smooth Stone (Paperback)
This book really exceeded my expectations. It was flat-out just a good story that had a little bit of a mystery going on, a little possibility for romance, and a whole lot of God's love. It was so very refreshing to read a story that dealt with real problems that could only be solved by turning to a real God, and also the continual theme that simply was, "You can't run away from God."
Alex is not a perfect person...not by a long shot. He pretty much becomes a loner once he becomes of age because of how badly he was treated in his early years, especially while he was in the foster system. All of a sudden, there is the possibility that he's about to receive a huge inheritance. That is...if he is the Alex Donnelly that's supposed to be receiving it. Alex actually doesn't care one whit about the money. He just wants some answers for why it involves his parents who passed away when he was just a child.
I loved how, in spite of Alex trying to run away from all that was happening to him at once, there were people all around surrounding him with Christian love. Even though the road was long and hard for pretty much everyone that was involved in Alex's life in some way or another, they never gave up on him. Wow...if only all Christians could respond like that on a daily basis, who knows what God might have in store for them?!?!
This is a great book for men and women alike. It deals with some tough issues, including rape, so it's probably best for just adults. Also, there is supposed to be a sequel in the works to One Smooth Stone....well, there's gotta be one because the very last line of the book is a cliffhanger! Hurry, Marcia, hurry! I'm ready to read it! :o)

One Smooth Stone - One Great Read!, October 18, 2010

Review - One Smooth Stone
Alex Donnelly is a man on the run - from the law and from the past. What better place to hide than the vast and rugged wilderness of the Yukon? Unexpectedly, he inherits a large sum of money and must leave the relative safety of his backwoods cabin and travel to Seattle to claim his inheritance. While there, some very disturbing revelations surface about his past and he is once again haunted by the demons of his abusive childhood while in foster care. He also meets Kenni Adams, daughter of a wealthy lawyer. The two are instantly attracted to one another, but Alex can't let go of his mistrust and sense of inferiority. Even more important, he can't believe in a loving God, as Kenni does, who would allow all the pain and turmoil in his life. He runs back to the Yukon, but instead of finding peace, his life become even more complicated as he meets with an unlikely mentor and his life is placed in danger of the deadliest kind.
Marcia Laycock constructs an intriguing, action packed story that combines an ever twisting plot, spectacular natural descriptions, and well developed characters, with a heart felt message of God's grace and mercy. She manages to expose the ugliness of sexual and emotional abuse in a way that elicits sympathy for both the victim and the perpetrator, yet still leaves room for hope and healing. Her descriptions of the Yukon are very true to reality, and her characters - even the Christians - are real human beings with frailties. This was a page turner. I honestly couldn't put it down once I got reading and wanted to follow through right to the end. I highly recommend ONE SMOOTH STONE.
