Gabe Dixon's music is amazing. Gabe Dixon's voice is amazing. Therefore, Gabe Dixon's CDs are amazing, including this one. One Spark is an amazing CD, one I could listen to over and over and not get tired of it.

What happened? I know he wrote with Dan Wilson from Semisonic and I really enjoyed his stuff with the Dixie Chicks so why couldnt Gabe write with him? I keep trying to like this record and I respect he wanted to grow but I can't hear it in the album. It's too over produced and sugary. I've tried listening to it while driving, walking and at work but I just can't get into it. I'm just let down by it and feel he tried to hard. But I will buy the next album hoping for the record that I really wanted.

I am a huge fan of Gabe Dixon, believe me. I was totally blown away by the freshness and originality of his previous album The Gabe Dixon Band. That was an album made by a singer-songwriter with an original voice, harkening back to a time when real music was made and lyrics actually had meaning. His band on that album moved as one, working with a sixth sense that had been established since their University of Miami days. Gabe decided to step out of his comfort zone for One Spark, casting his band aside (for now) and hooking up with a top L.A. session producer. The songwriting is still there, but the organic sound fronted by a piano-based trio is gone. The result is an over-produced, slick recording that tries to fill in any area of musical space with a guitar lick, an overdubbed vocal, or synth.
I heard some of these songs live in a club with Gabe and his former drummer before this album came out, and the way these songs breathed then compared to being stifled now is striking. A good example is "Even The Rain". A beautiful song, magical melody, heartfelt lyrics. Gabe doing this on solo piano is the best way to hear it. You can check out that version on Youtube.
The album version suffers from L.A studio intervention, with too many studio licks and overdubs. By the end of the song, there is so much going on it sounds like noise and the song itself gets lost.
Gabe, come back to the light, that "spark" that drove you in the first place. Simpler is better, much better.
I'm still a fan, I'm just waiting to see what you'll do next.

I couldn't wait for this album to be released as I love Gabe's last CD. But I'm not finding much I like on this one. With the exception of " On A Day Just Like Today", the rest don't grab me. His piano is drowned out and the lyrics aren't as poignant as the last album. Where are the songs like "And the World Turned," "Ever After You" and "All Will Be Well"? I'll keep listening but I expected much more on my first and subsequent listens. I'm also disappointed the lyrics aren't on the album.

This album is fun, snappy, moody, & artistic. Gabe is always a delight to the ears! I highly recommend him.

I got this album a few months ago, and it's great! Fine musicianship, strong writing, and a compelling voice. I think Gabe Dixon is a wonderful new talent in the vein of Billy Joel, Elton John, and Ben Folds. His voice sounds a bit like Paul McCartney, and I was interested to learn that he played and sang on one of Paul's albums a few years back, and evidently declined to tour with him so he could instead work on his first CD (also excellent). Take a listen!

Gabe Dixon is talented keyboardist/singer/songwriter who played with Paul McCartney at the Concert for NYC after 9/11. He played on Paul's album "Driving Rain" which had been released earlier that year. I believe that he was offered to join Sir Paul's touring band but obviously decided against it. In any case, I have bought his previous releases after seeing him open for Loggins and Messina during their reunion tour about three years ago. He really has a gift for the Pop song and this album is assured and well produced. This album sounds good from the first listen and expresses his increasing songcraft abilities. I look forward to more from Gabe Dixon and perhaps headlining soon. He deserves a bigger stage. Great Job!
