Editorial Reviews

Review

* “This arresting story of the first Christmas has a succinct, powerful, rhyming text and striking illustrations unlike any other version of the Nativity story, with art and words perfectly matched in an artistic tour de force. This unforgettable interpretation stands out as a bright, multifaceted star in the crowded constellation of Christmas Eve stories.” –Kirkus reviews (starred)

* “This tender, poetic retelling of the age-old story takes the form of a whispered prayer as it highlights the nurturing given to babies of many species. The art and the words strike just the right tone of reverence and delight. A lovely offering.”—School Library Journal (starred)

"In Thompson’s poetic, reverent text, two voices tell of the night Jesus was born. This peaceful ode to parental love is just right for bedtime reading. Bean’s digitally colored pencil illustrations portray the calm nighttime scenes in black, beige, dark gray-blue, and a sprinkling of white. The gentle words are beautifully matched by the strikingly composed art; both are infused with meaning and are powerful in their simplicity."--The Horn Book

I don't often use the word elegant when describing a children's picture book, but that's what comes to mind when I think of One Starry Night. It has two separate narratives that go together so seamlessly that the final effect is powerful. In bold, we have one line of text per two page spread stating how on one starry night, each animal mother watches over her child: "A cat watched over her kitten", "A dog watched over her pup", and so on. When we get to the end, the text switches over to on THIS starry night "Mary and Joseph watched over their newborn babe and the world was filled with love".

The second narrative feels almost like a prayer and reinforces the fact that someone is always watching out for us, wherever we are. It is a simple, beautiful message, and when it ends with "God's will be done", "Amen", the reader is left with a restful feeling that marks this as a great choice for a Christmas bedtime read.

The illustrations only add to the understated elegance, with their muted tones that perfectly evoke a starry night. Children will easily relate to their simplicity and be captivated by their charm. This is a great choice for any child's Christmas collection, especially young toddlers and preschoolers. A perfect gift idea and also a good choice as a read aloud for the very young. An enthusiastic recommend.

This is a wonderful Christmas book--good for young children and also older children and adults. Our church used this book for children's time during an Advent worship service. The authors words and illustrators beautiful illustrations were a great pairing. I have bought other books written and illustrated by Jonathan Bean and look forward to buying more books by him.

However, it is a sweet story about parent and child animals coming together to see baby Jesus in the stable. And baby Jesus is only mentioned and shown on the last two pages of this book along with His parents.

I was looking for a nice book to read with my toddler about the nativity story. This one is kind of drab...all the pictures are the same colors shown on the cover of the book. I think there are many other better choices out there.
