The second half of the book tells the story of Bob's greatest challenge - a walk across America to raise money for the Red Cross, World Vision, and other relief organizations. Beginning from California in 1982, Bob walked - propelling himself on padded knuckles - across the entire country. Three and one half years later - and 4,900,016 steps - later, he completed his pilgrimage at the base of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. There, he placed a wreath by the name of the man whose life he had tried to save when Bob sustained his own near-fatal injury.
