Editorial Reviews

Or perhaps you know them as the Dandleers - at least that's the way the label read on their first release on the tiny, Mercury-distributed Amp 3 label. True one-hit wonders, the group scored big on their first attempt - the atmospheric One Summer Night, a strong hit from 1958 - and promptly went unheard for the rest of their relatively short career, despite a solid doo wop sound. This CD reissues their entire career output: four sides for Amp 3 (one unissued); 9 sides for Mercury (3 unissued); 6 sides for Epic (2 unissued), 2 for Everest and four for Smash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Doo-Wop At It's Best April 5, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you like Doo-Wop, and you must or you wouldn't be looking at this, then I definitely recommend this. The Danleers was a great group and " One

Summer Night " is a classic song that will never die. I can't understand why more songs on this cd weren't hits for they are fantastic. The sound is fantastic and I listen to it quite often.

While still in their teens in 1957, the Brooklyn quintet of lead Jimmy Weston, first tenor Johnny Lee, second tenor Willie Ephriam, baritone Charles "Nat" McCune and bass Roosevelt Mays began street-corner doo-wop singing, as many their age were doing all over the eastern seaboard. They hadn't yet considered a name when they approached Danny Webb to manage them and after agreeing to take them on he also showed he wasn't shy in the least when he suggested The Danleers - based upon his name.

Armed with two songs Webb had composed - One Summer Night and Wheelin' And A-Dealin' - he brought them to Bill Lasley, owner of the small AMP-3 label where, on April 1, 1958, they cut both sides for release on AMP-3 2115. But when it came out their name had been spelled Dandleers on the label. It seems some technician got it garbled over the phone and the mistake would continue to be the stuff of rumours for years after that they and The Danderliers were one and the same (they had had a # 10 R&B in May 1955 with Chop Chop Boom on States 147).

Surprisingly, despite the lack of promotional funds at Lasley's disposal, disc jockeys took a liking to One Summer Night and its steady play over the air led Mercury, who distributed AMP-3 records, to release it as Mercury71322 at which point it really took off nationally, eventually peaking at # 4 R&B and # 7 Billboard Pop Top 100 by late July - with the correct spelling. Alas, that would also turn out to be their sole national charter as nothing else they ever did at Mercury, or at Epic, Everlast, Smash, and Le Mans (see the list in the Comments below) could again grab that brass ring, ultimately leaving them in the On-Hit Wonder club. But that one hit remains one of the most enduring among Golden Oldies fans.
