A Story of Courage & Survival,
By A Customer
This review is from: One Survivor Remembers (World War 2 Survivor Documentary) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of the most moving documentaries I have ever seen. Gerda Weissman is a most compelling storyteller, you can not help but be moved by her memories. The filmmakers and editors have done a phenomenal job selecting and arranging images and subtle effects to compliment Gerda's words. I show this video on the first day of a college-level Documentary Production class I teach each Spring. Students, who might normally be bored by such a slow paced story of the past, are drawn in by Gerda's presence and courage. At the end of the semester I have the students evaluate all the docs we have screened, One Surivor Remembers always makes the top of the list.

This documentary, and a wonderful curriculum and packet of primary sources, is available for teachers through the Teaching Tolerance program for FREE. It is a perfect fit with an Anne Frank unit or any unit dealing with the Holocaust or genocide. Visit www.teachingtolerance.org for more information. The Teaching Tolerance project is part of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. If you know how they are primarily funded you may enjoy the irony of getting free materials to teach tolerance and combat racism and prejudice.I am using this film with my 8th grade class. The film is simple and eloquent and I remember seeing excerpts of it at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It is a must see. No wonder it was recognized by the Academy Awards.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: One Survivor Remembers (World War 2 Survivor Documentary) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It is a great movie; we saw it at school. I wouldn't reccomend it for children under eight, because its a bit graphic. But, what Gerda Weissman Klein did is amazing. I give it 8 stars!

I had been looking for this DVD for a very long time and was very happy to find it, since I had read the book One Survivor Remembers several times. My only wish is that the DVD could have been longer, 43 minutes is too short to tell such a moving story. But, it was effective.

A great documentary about the life of Gerta Weissemann Kleiss during World War II. From her being shipped from her home in Poland as a pretty young teenage girl, to her trials and tribulations while working in forced labor camps for Nazi Germany, to being liberated by a young American Army officer who later became her husband. It is an uplifting story about a very special lady. It is a great documentary and I highly recommend it to anybody. It should be required watching in all schools to show the true horrors of the Holocaust. A true story about courage and the will to survive.

I was substitute teaching a class in high school and we were to watch this movie. I was so impressed I wrote down the name of it. Basically it's just a touching story and a good reminder that our lives are not so bad afterall. A nice perspective.Con - overpriced! |
