Grade 2-5-In this eighth book about the dog detective, Sam is looking forward to getting candy treats and hopes that this will be the scariest Halloween ever. She continues to communicate telepathically with 10-year-old Jennie, who keeps her supplied with people food. After Jennie's friend Beth finds a local legend about ghouls at the library, the trio starts noticing unusual things happening at the Catherbys' house down the street. Although the elderly neighbors are usually at home, the young detectives find the house empty, with trunks piled up on the porch, and see ghouls pulling into the driveway. Although Sam isn't as smart as she thinks she is, the mystery is solved steadily and predictably. Tiny pictures of the canine with humorous captions open each chapter and are used as text breaks throughout. Because of the simple writing, humor, and high interest of a dog detective solving a not-so-scary mystery, this book may appeal to reluctant readers as well as fans of the series.
