4.0 out of 5 stars Default : One Thing Remains
I really enjoyed this CD. It doesn't have the radio play power that their first album did but it's very good. In fact, I enjoyed this CD more than the first one (and of course they are both better than Ecolocation). Count On Me is good, everyone needs to start calling in to the radio stations and getting that played.

1.0 out of 5 stars LACKS ORIGINALITY
Default has captured listeners by proving that they can rock out as hard as any band around, while receiving pretty decent airplay. Yet as seen on previous albums, the band does not seem distinct, and their third album, One Thing Remains, is no exception.

I really enjoyed this CD. It doesn't have the radio play power that their first album did but it's very good. In fact, I enjoyed this CD more than the first one (and of course they are both better than Ecolocation). I saw these guys in concert with Nickelback and Trapt. They blew Trapt away. I really started liking them after that concert because they put a lot of energy out on stage and they are just a fun band to watch.
I think Default has yet to hit their peek. The lead singer has a great voice. One thing Default does need to do is change their sound up a little. Most of the songs are very similar and they are all hard. Obviously that is Default's comfort zone but it wouldn't hurt them at all to come up with a couple of slower, radio friendly songs, so they can really put themselves on the map. However, they definitely need to stick with the hard rock as well so their "superfans" won't call them sellouts. This is a very strong effort by Default and I can't wait to hear from them again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album, January 1, 2006

This is one amazing album! I liked most the songs on this; such as All Is Forgiven, It Only Hurts, I Cant Win, Count On Me, Hiding From The Sun, Beautiful Flower and The Memory Will Never Die. Right now the only music that is played on my personal stereo are by Default, Nickelback and Theory Of A Deadman (all of which appear to belong to the same genre in music, and I think I'd have to appreiciate** Chad Kroger's hard work in making these bands as successful as they are now).

Out of all the Default albums I have purchased, I'd have to say this was the best.

This is a must have for those who like music by artists such as Nickelback and Theory Of A Deadman.

** Please excuse the spelling error.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good investment for a new listener!, January 12, 2006

I have never known of Default until the single "Count on Me." (Though I did just learn that "Wasting Time" was their song...)
While those songs are "singles," they're are definatley more songs on this cd equally deserving of radio play.

The majority of the front 9 songs are awesome, they all have great melodies with nice accompaniment, Dallas' vocals are truly a melodic rock listener's dreams. They are overall just great rock songs! "All is forgiven" is as awesome opener. The CD then loses steam after "Count on me." Only tracks 7 & 9 hold any luster for me after that. "The Memory..." is a very moving song, if you have any relation to it.

Overall this CD is very good, though after track 9 it seems as if they recycled the same music...it gets so boring that the last 2 tracks end with you wondering what they were even about, because you were sleeping...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Record!, November 3, 2005
This review is from: One Thing Remains (Audio CD)
I have to agree with the other reviews that the third effort from Default is probably the most mature sounding to date. I was eager to pick this one up, but also was a little hesitant because "Elocation" took longer than expected to grow on me; it's now a great album in my book. I don't know if I can say if this is the best one, because the debut is hard to beat. Nonetheless, this would be a great record to put in your car stereo and listen to from start to finish. Standout tracks for me are "It Only Hurts", "Count On Me", and "Beautiful Flower". Oh, by the way, they have completely lost any similarities to Nickelback, another favorite Canadian band of mine. While their first two albums they were basically under Chad Kroeger's wing, and they received his songwriting help on this one as well, they have seemed to adopt their own sound. Pick this one up ASAP!

5.0 out of 5 stars Other reviewers can't be wrong!, December 26, 2005

After reading the reviews and listening to samples of songs from several different artists I could not find anything I thought I really wanted to buy. (I had originally thought of buying the new Nickelback cd.)I finally came across this cd and listened to the sample songs and read the reviews and was both impressed and blown away by how many 5 stars it received. Shortly after I went to Target to buy it and I am completely happy with my purchase. I really like the vocals, the lyrics, and the music itself. My favorite song is Beautiful Flower; but the cool thing is that ALL of the songs on the cd are nice to listen to! Buy One Thing Remains by Default-it is definitely worth your hard earned dollars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Default returns with a vengeance, October 14, 2006
By
This review is from: One Thing Remains (Audio CD)
There is a unmistakable link between Default and Nickelback. Not only are the lead singers from both bands related (brothers), the sound of both bands are similar. The same style of song layout, the similar style of vocal direction. But what is different is that 'One Thing Remains' is a much stronger album, lyrically and sounding than Nickelback's latest album 'Photograph'. This is because of two reasons, 1. Default has toured with the likes of established bands like 3 Doors Down, Evanescence, Nickelback and Sum41. 2. Chad Kroeger has taken the role of producing this album fulltime, in Elocation he only produced a few songs here and there.

The album art cover is interesting and paints a theme to this album and upon listening to the songs herein, the theme is set throughout the range of upbeat, tempo driven beats. Make no mistake folks, this is a rock album with a slightly alternative tweak here and there. The album has 11 songs and is fairly short, many songs are in the mid 3 minute marks. But this does not detract from the overall success of this album.

The album starts with a new hit song from Default in 'All Is Forgiven' that talks about forgiveness and its part in our world. Another good song is 'It Only Hurts' that harks back to Default's earlier album hit song 'Deny'. It has a nice video clip btw. 'Count On Me' is another nice song that has a pure rock feel with a few riffs. Another soon to be hit song from this album is 'Hiding From The Sun' that has a fast pace and one can't help but get involved in this song.

Overall, the release will please all Default fans and Nickelback fans. This album is lyrically brilliant, produced excellently and a logical successor to Nickelback when they leave the rock scene. Look forward to 2007 being another bumper year for Default.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, December 2, 2005
This review is from: One Thing Remains (Audio CD)
Being somewhat dissapointed with Elocation I was reluctant to even consider this album. However, my curiousity got the best of me and I am glad it did. This actually is an excellent CD with some great songs on there. Well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Default expresses tremendous growth on One Thing Remains...., October 27, 2005
This review is from: One Thing Remains (Audio CD)
Default isn't quite as known as say Nickelback, but that's an injustice. Default is better than Nickelback, a lot of bands are better than Nickelback. Unlike Nickelback's latest effort, One Thing Remains conveys a sense of growth. Default's last two records were great, they take massive strides with each release. The Fallout was a great record, very raw, untamed. Elocation is when they became true professionals, with a tighter sound and better production. And now, with One Thing Remains, Default eclipses it's past work with an even tighter sound. Especially in terms of Dallas's vocal work, and the band's lyrics. Things start off strong with "All is Forgiven", a song that means a lot to Dallas, and it is the kick-off for his own reasons. It is also the perfect radio song, definitley ear catching, something that should get people buying the records. Not to say that they don't sell, there's a market for this stuff. Default's success is said to have ridden on the coat tails of Nickelback, but this is a completely uneducated assertion. Default sounds nothing like Nickelback, outside of maybe a few superficial aspects. But none of this shows up on One Thing Remains, Default is an entirely different beast. "I Can't Win" is the second track on the record, and it's definitley one of the better songs on the album. There is no denying it though, One Thing Remains is only getting started. It never gets boring, there are no dips(unless you're tired of "Count on Me") and the entire experience is utterly exhilarating. Though it is hard to choose my top five songs, I'm going to have to go with "I Can't Win", "All is Forgiven", "Found My Way Out", and "Get out of This Alive".

To go through and explain every song on One Thing Remains would be a difficult thing to do, and completely unnecessary at that. Instead, take my word for it, if you are a Default fan, or just a fan of rock music in general, check out One Thing Remains. This is Default's best, this is an amazing band that needs all the support it can get.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best One Yet..., October 12, 2005
This review is from: One Thing Remains (Audio CD)
Default just keeps getting better and better and this album is proof. In fact, this album is very, very close to a 5 star disc. I won't be handing out 5 stars easily, but I was very tempted to on this one. The disc is extremely solid from start to finish. I recommend you just push play and let it go. I have yet to skip to the next song.

It's vintage Default all the way through. If your expecting a new direction, you'll be disappointed. If your expecting more of the same with improvement, then you'll love it. All songs are great and Dallas' voice is crystal clear (as always) and very controlled.

While I love 'em all, I think The Way We Were is the best song on the disc followed by I Can't Win, All is Forgiven, Beautiful Flower...aw, heck...they're all great.
