This review is from: One Thousand and One Nights, Vol. 6 (v. 6) (Paperback)
I absolutely LOVED the "Socrates in Love" story in the previous volume and had thought it ended then--so I was THRILLED to find Socrates and Alcibiades actually on the cover of volume 6! Quite possibly the sweetest love story I have ever read (and just the kind of BL I like--a joining of kindred spirits in a truly egalitarian, mutually respectful sense, and in one of my favorite historical settings~). I love how Jinseok Jeon writes his ukes--they're never just cute and brainlessly insipid like in a typical BL manga. Like Sehara, Alcibiades is an intelligent and able young man who has his own ideas and dignity. What really impressed me about his portrayal (especially in this half of the story) is that despite appearing a vain and narcisistic diva at first glance, he is actually quite sincere and serious about his commitment to Socrates, and even when broken-hearted, reacts like a man (as opposed to a girl with male organs like the typical BL manga uke) who has his own pride--it really makes both characters very believable and realistic. Definitely the best BL couple I have ever read--their relationship is sweet, sad, heart-warming and funny all at the same time. It actually made me go out and buy Plato's Republic so I could read more about Socrates and Alcibiades (their courtship is included in there too! :D)
I think this one actually finally dethrones Cleopatra as my favorite Sehara story! :) A must-read for every fan of this series! |
