Narrated by the youngest child in a black family, this brief book focuses on the joy of being one of three sisters. The simple text is extended by the skillful watercolor illustrations that give each sister a unique look and personality, but also emphasize the feeling of togetherness as the girls laugh, hold hands, or march down the street "like stair steps." Of course, the older sisters don't always want the youngest along, but then she gets to be one of a different kind of three with her mother and father. Angela Johnson is the author of the Coretta Scott King Honor picture book When I Am Old with You; as well as A Sweet Smell of Roses, illustrated by Eric Velasquez; Just Like Josh Gibson, illustrated by Beth Peck; and I Dream of Trains, which was also illustrated by Loren Long. She has won three Coretta Scott King Awards, one each for her novels Heaven, Toning the Sweep, and The First Part Last. In recognition of her outstanding talent, Angela was named a 2003 MacArthur Fellow. She lives in Kent, Ohio.

As a first grade teacher, I set up "Author for the Week" I search for 5 books by the same author. we read the book, discuss the style of the author and I encourage my students to write and adopt the author's style if they so choose. Angela Johnson is a fabulous author. Students easiy identify with Johnson's story plot. The ilustrations are brillant. My studetns have enjoyed all of her books!
