Viva la Vance!, September 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: One Thru Fourteen (Audio CD)
One Thru Fourteen is by far the best piece of work that Vance has rendered to date. It's a true montage of what he does best- brilliant songwriting and captivation of the heart. There seem to be no boundaries this time around. Known thus far as a contemporary folk artist, Vance has managed to break down barriers that bind the art form, yet doesn't stray too far to alienate the purist. It's folk with force! Vance displays his versatilty in style by incorporating a bit of jazz, pop and even blues. The album begans with a burst of electricity, and slowly mellows out softly towards the end. By the time you begin to curl up with such sweet ballads, he wakes you up with a powerful a capella number that will make the hair on your body stand straight up. And closing are classic, acoustic melodies that built the strength of his signature sound.

great musician, good album, November 24, 2003
This review is from: One Thru Fourteen (Audio CD)
Overall this album is pretty good. However, it is a little over produced at times. It may just be a personal preference but that's how I feel. To me, when songs sound too polished, it takes away from the honesty and the realness of the lyrics. And there are several moments like that on this record. Thank God, however, that the whole record isn't like that. Songs such as Eliza Jane and Highrise are some of the most beautiful, honest songs I've ever heard, and it's almost worth it to buy the album just for those two. And truthfully, all of the songs are good songs, some just lack the power that, those of us who have seen him live, know that he can deliver. This album would have been five stars without a doubt if he would've walked in the studio with his accoustic, recorded the songs, and released it. But sadly, they added instrument after instrument and the music suffered. Some people don't mind it, but I do. Which is why, though I like the album and recommend it, I prefer Somerville Live. A completely live accoustic set in which the listener can sit back and enjoy Vance's music for the honest poetry that it is.

Vance Gilbert is the BEST performer and has the best voice of any musician I have sceen. I will always go to his concert when he comes to my state. I'd pay 150.00 to see his show, luckily its usually only about 20.00 and WELL worth it. I love Vance and his Music! GREAT CD, go buy it!
