Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The popular illustrator and greeting-card artist brings oddball humor and plenty of sassy energy to Boynton on Board, a quartet of concept board books. Each volume features a die-cut front cover framing a picture of its ebullient cartoon stars. A zany sensibility gives an extra bounce to the otherwise conventional counting book One, Two, Three! A similar silliness suffuses Dinosaurs , which explores opposites. In Barnyard , farm animals dance a boisterous, breathless, knee-slapping reel called, with great panache, by a fiddle-playing cow: "Bow to the horse. / Bow to the cow. / Twirl with the pig if you know how." The rowdy crew in Monsters bursts in upon a mild-mannered hippo and makes "the mess that monsters make," but returns to make amends. Fresh and buoyant, these books are good, clean fun. Ages 1-4.

Amusing as ever, Boynton has created a counting book that shares the joys of friends (hippos, cats, pigs, cows and more) in groups as well as the pleasure of a solitary walk by one. The pictures are funny and the scenes are quite different from those found in the usual counting books. A treat for all. -- Marilyn Courtot, Children's Literature

Sandra Boynton is a popular American cartoonist, children's author, songwriter, producer, and director. More than 60 million of her books have been sold--"mostly to friends and family," she says. She has also written (with Michael Ford) and produced five albums of renegade children's music. Three of her five albums have been certified Gold [over 500,000 copies sold] and "Philadelphia Chickens," nominated for a Grammy, has been certified Platinum [over 1 million copies sold.] Boynton has also directed six music videos of her songs, including the award-winning "One Shoe Blues" starring B B King. This book often sits next to "Goodnight Moon" and "Where the Wild Things Are" on our 18 month old's bookshelf, but according to him it's better than those classics. He loves identifying the characters, their actions, and their expressions. We have lots of fun reading this whimsical book over and over...especially the part about "ten makes a celebration LOUD, LOUD, LOUD...and one is wonderful after a crowd" because of the voice range you can use. A definite to have with or without a Boynton collection!

Unsurprisingly with a name like One, Two, Three!, this is a counting book, but it isn't the average counting book. This is a Boynton book we are talking about after all. In this book we are counting critters. "One is good for a quiet walk. Two is right for a quiet talk." Just like in Hippos Go Berserk, (another book by Sandra Boynton), we count up to ten, but this time we don't count down again and we aren't only counting hippos, although hippos appear many times in the book. (A plus in my mind.) Just like all those other Boynton books, this one rhymes and flows wonderfully. The pictures are excellent too: cute, bright, bold, and colorful. This book rates high on my list of favorite Boynton books.

This is a wonderful book.
I love books for children that have simple pictures that aren't too distracting. When the pictures have too much going on in them, it's hard to get the story. This book has simple pictures.
I love books that lead to other activities using the book- for example, in this book we can count the animals, make the sounds of the animals, act like the animals are acting, etc. Wonderful.
My son LOVES the last bit- Loud Loud Loud! He gets very excited reading that part. I would say that this doesn't work as a night time book for us.
However, this is a wonderful book.

A Counting book that not only introduces numbers but animals as well. We love this better than the classic "How Do Dinosaurs Count to Ten" and the series "Chika Chika 123". This makes counting really fun and enjoying. My son would ask for this during the day when he's done playing. We read different sets of books at night and at day time, but this book gets a consistent request from him. He helps me count the animals in each page by pointing on to them one by one. With the help of this book, I bet he'd learn counting ahead of his alphabet. No doubt about that. It's a must have for your children.

Some of the rhymes reach a bit. If you were a first time writer and you presented this one, you'd be laughed away. However, Boynton's drawings are clever enough. The counting's easy. It's not too typical for a counting book. I do like the ending.
Her characters are always fat little funny animals doing very human things. That's a treat. I like the idea of a mommy cat and a kid cat sitting by the fire in an easy chair having a cat chat.
We read this one a lot. It's a board book so it's nice and durable. My two kids have probably chewed on every book we've got. This one endures.
This could be a good choice for a new mom.

At 2 1/2 my son is really starting to outgrow the typical toddler books but Boynton's books, because of the lyrical rhymes and hilarious and charming illustrations remain favorites to read all the time. As you might guess, this book is a counting book as various animal groups engage in activities with increasing numbers on each page, all the way up to ten. The books are as fun to read for a parent as they are for a child to listen to and when you add in that they are also learning their numbers AND their animals, you really can't go wrong. This one is another winner from Sandra!

I found the book fun. It is easy to read and understand and all ages can enjoy it. If you are reading to different ages it will hold the attention of the younger children because of the colorful pictures, the older children will read along because they have it memorized. I have just about all of Sandra Boynton;s books for the kids.

We are big Sandra Boynton fans and own a lot of her books. This one is usual Boynton fare--cute animals and sweet rhymes, with some humor too. But it doesn't seem to engage my number-loving toddler. I think it would be much better if there were numerals on the pages (the numbers are spelled out as words instead) and if the numbers related better to what my kid actually does (he doesn't sip tea or run races yet).

If you're looking for Boynton books, my kid loves these:
Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! (Boynton on Board)
Barnyard Dance! (Boynton on Board)
Pajama Time! (Lap Edition) (Boynton on Board)
Doggies (Boynton on Board)
The Going-To-Bed Book

Even better: the first three come as a 3-pack: Big Box of Boynton: Barnyard Dance! Pajama Time! Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs!
