If you know of Jonathan Goodwin, you probably have an idea as to some of the adventures he might embark on by the episode guide. If you aren't a fan already, this series will win you over. Goodwin is obvious a fan of adventure and the challenges set up for him in these shows lend themselves to the occasional misfire, the often humorous and, quite often, painful ramifications of failing to achieve whatever goal is set before him.

You may think this is just a daredevil at work, but there is something much more intelligent going on here. The challenges are presented in a manner that doles out tons of fun information as each subject is researched and explored. In the end, the series is surprisingly inspirational... encouraging every viewer to find there own challenges in life to examine and overcome. (But, seriously, don't try this stuff at home!)

ONCE AGAIN ****SPOILER ALERT**** skip opening paragraph to avoid big ones and there are smaller ones sprinkled throughout!!!!!!!

After watching this "escapologist" and his support team fail in a "flooded office" escape stunt in the pilot, curiosity drove me on. I admired greatly the fact that rather than redo the experiment or rig things to make it look successful, the team was willing to show an honest failure. In fact, not only did the escape fail, but the safety mechanism in place short circuited as well, requiring a previously unannounced backup plan. The backup safety, involving a sledghammer frantically beaten against the final escape route, had me on the edge of my seat.

***END OF SPOILER***

As I watched subsequent episodes I noticed several things. First, apart from the pilot episode, there was a marked absence of any EMT or ambulance rescue squads present for the stunts. I found this extremely irresponsible and highly unusual for a show airing on the Discovery channel.

The educational factor consumes most of each episode. The "escape" is outlined early on and the bulk of the episode shows either the design engineer or Jonathan himself preparing in various ways for the big "event." Most often, this involves much smaller tests of equipment and/or human endurance.

For me personally however, what made the show fall flat (and made me opt out of purchasing the season after watching a couple of episodes via Amazon Prime) was the presence of Mike, Jonathan's sidekick from college and trusty bff. For reasons never explained, Mike often gamely joins in the smaller tests apparently against his initial will.

It has its moments, but really, this just isn't that great of television. An hour of boredom for being interested for five seconds.
