A super-fun newgrass classic,

This review is from: One Way Track (Audio CD)
Dig those '70s aviator glasses and that shaggy, shoulder-length hair! Dobro whiz Jerry Douglas and future country star Ricky Skaggs join on this near-perfect, traditionally-oriented newgrass album. The picking is magnificent, the group singing is warm and impasssioned, the choice of material is rich in history and harmony and shows the group's mastery of and devotion to old-school classics, particularly catchy old gospel tunes. The album falls apart just a little at the end, when a few live performances show the band's more indulgent side -- a jazzy instrumental jam, a couple of tunes with more raggedy edges -- but on the whole, this is a very impressive and fun album, one of the best ever from this late 1970s scene. Of a piece with album's like Tony Rice's "Manzanita," J.D. Crowe's "My Home Ain't In The Hall of Fame," or the fab Bluegrass Album Band albums of the early '80s. Highly recommended!

20 years later -- still going strong,
This review is from: One Way Track (Audio CD)
I just purchased this CD because I am trying to expand my bluegrass collection. It was produced in 1981, but the songs are timeless. There are a lot of Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt songs on this CD which are done very well by Boone Creek. A young Ricky Skaggs sings lead on most of the cuts and it's interesting to note how his voice has matured and mellowed over the years; still all in all it is a great CD. Daniel Prayed, Head over Heels, Can't you hear me calling, are some great songs. There are three live recordings at the end, and although the sound is not great quality, they are great songs. This is a great CD.
