Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Deborah Cox's self-titled debut made waves back in 1995, but perhaps not enough to prepare her for a much more crowded (and cutthroat) playing field this time around. As much as you want to applaud her for sticking to her soul on One Wish, you can't help longing for a pop crossover hit like "Sentimental" and "Who Do U Love?" The first single, "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here," is a disappointing attempt, but "September" and the title track--which ups the ante on the funk--step up to the challenge. Naughty by Nature's Kay-Gee helms the boards on the Next-flavored ballad, "It's Over Now," and R.L. of Next cameos on "We Can't Be Friends," a classic-style duet that has all the ingredients for a melodic masterpiece. --Rebecca Wallwork

USA Today
Canadian-born Cox follows up her successful self- titled 1995 debut with a mix of honey-voiced ballads and dance-floor grooves.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!! WHAT A GREAT ALBUM AND A WONDERFUL VOICE!!!, August 4, 2004
By Darrren12000 "Darren" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
I am listening to this album for the first time today. Yes, a little late. I heard a few singles on the radio or in clubs - as dance remixes. I had never sat down with the entire project before. I am overwhelmed. Deborah Cox has a very powerful and beautiful voice. The arrangements are really nice -- they could be better, but for contemporary R&B, they are good. Her voice is what makes the album. She is one of the best r&b voices since the 90s. I just cant think of another singer since the 80s who is this good. Keep up the good work!!!

Why on earth does she not get more attnention in the USA? Beyonce and Usher???!!! What is wrong with the US music industry?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great R&B Album!, February 28, 2004
Deborah Cox had a hit on her hands with this one. The dance remix of "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" was a #1 smash and the original version is just as powerful! I like the opening track "September", it has a nice R&B groove to it, nice slow jam. There is also a remix of "September" at the end of the album, track 14 (it's unlisted). My favorite ballad would have to be "Couldn't We", one of the best ones from Diane Warren I've heard, this one should have been a single! The title track is a nice retro R&B song. She sounds great on the jazzy/R&B "I Won't Give Up", and shines on uptempos like "I Never Knew" and "It's Over Now". Other highlights include "One Day You Will", "Love Is On The Way" and "We Can't Be Friends". This is a great album from a talented Canadian R&B singer!

5.0 out of 5 stars MISS COX AT HER BEST., January 16, 2004
By RICO (SAN DIEGO CA.) - See all my reviews
I bought One Wish when it was release, I just re-orderd it, This is one of the best albums I ever heard. Somebody here ask what it sold, 1998-99 It was certified gold, over 500.000 copies The lead single N.S.B.H, went platinum shifting over a 1000.000 peaked at number 2.on the HOT 100. I must say this women has one of the best vocal ranges out there, and yes it should has sold way more than what it did, at least a good 5 million, But im sure Deborah is thankfull for the support so far. My favorite song is track 10 (I never knew). One Wish is a very good album I recommend it for your cd collection.
