WOW!!! WHAT A GREAT ALBUM AND A WONDERFUL VOICE!!!,
By Darrren12000 "Darren" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One Wish (Audio CD)
I am listening to this album for the first time today. Yes, a little late. I heard a few singles on the radio or in clubs - as dance remixes. I had never sat down with the entire project before. I am overwhelmed. Deborah Cox has a very powerful and beautiful voice. The arrangements are really nice -- they could be better, but for contemporary R&B, they are good. Her voice is what makes the album. She is one of the best r&b voices since the 90s. I just cant think of another singer since the 80s who is this good. Keep up the good work!!!
Why on earth does she not get more attnention in the USA? Beyonce and Usher???!!! What is wrong with the US music industry?

Great R&B Album!,

Deborah Cox had a hit on her hands with this one. The dance remix of "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" was a #1 smash and the original version is just as powerful! I like the opening track "September", it has a nice R&B groove to it, nice slow jam. There is also a remix of "September" at the end of the album, track 14 (it's unlisted). My favorite ballad would have to be "Couldn't We", one of the best ones from Diane Warren I've heard, this one should have been a single! The title track is a nice retro R&B song. She sounds great on the jazzy/R&B "I Won't Give Up", and shines on uptempos like "I Never Knew" and "It's Over Now". Other highlights include "One Day You Will", "Love Is On The Way" and "We Can't Be Friends". This is a great album from a talented Canadian R&B singer!

Underrated Classic...,

Deborah Cox's "One Wish" can easily be dubbed a sleeper but in my opinion, she shows no signs of weariness on this album. "One Wish" is an album that is perfectly punctuated with depth and has an intricate way of maintaining the listener's interest. With a unique and cohesive array of diversity, which include writing and production from herself, Naughty By Nature & Next's producer Kier Gist (a.k.a. KayGee), hit-makers Montell Jordan, Shep Crawford, Stevie J., Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins," and even Diane Warren, who lends the schmaltzy ballad, "One Day You Will," "One Wish" explores love and relationships from a deeper perspective. I love how she uses her voice to not only dazzle the audience, but also becomes one with each songs' persona. I was like, "I may be a male, but even I can relate to how expressive she is!" The Dance-fused "September," with its keen bass line, slickly synthesized guitars and eclectic rhythms tells the story of how a friendship transforms from a platonic nature to an emotional thrill ride of sensuous lovemaking, whereas "We Can't Be Friends" showcases Deborah & R.L. (of Next) passionately and vividly testifying the hardships of walking away from a special someone. Other cuts include 1998's longest-running radio single, "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here," (penned exquisitely by Montell Jordan) her second single, "It's Over Now," (produced by KayGee) the title-track, "One Wish," which features DJ Quik's solid production and stellar rap vocals, Darkchild's "Just When I Think I'm Over You," a clever reference to Rod Temperton & Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" in "Love Is On The Way" and the smooth "I Won't Give Up." The only flaw to this record is that there were one too many dance versions included. The remixes to "Things Just Ain't The Same" & "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" could have been omitted. Regardless, "One Wish" is a fabulous record that was an absolutely underrated classic.

MISS COX AT HER BEST.,

I bought One Wish when it was release, I just re-orderd it, This is one of the best albums I ever heard. Somebody here ask what it sold, 1998-99 It was certified gold, over 500.000 copies The lead single N.S.B.H, went platinum shifting over a 1000.000 peaked at number 2.on the HOT 100. I must say this women has one of the best vocal ranges out there, and yes it should has sold way more than what it did, at least a good 5 million, But im sure Deborah is thankfull for the support so far. My favorite song is track 10 (I never knew). One Wish is a very good album I recommend it for your cd collection.

The BEST album of the millenium!!,
By A Customer

This album is over a year old now, and it still hasn't left my CD player. From the first track to the last, Deborah's powerful voice and funky beats never dissappoint. The upbeat "It's Over Now" and "I Never Knew" are just a couple of the highlights. Of Course Deborah's "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" is the backbone to this album. Deborah, who has not been carefull with her choices of singles, has ignored the more powerful ballads, which are surefire hits. Like "Couldn't We" and "I won't Give up" as well as "One Day You WIll". The title track is also a surefire hit. Her next single, "September" is sure to do damage on the pop charts. Egerly awaiting her third albuM!!

well worth the chance!,

I bought this CD after seeing Deborah Cox perform in AIDA on Broadway in NYC. I had heard of her, but didn't know any of her songs. I was so blown away by her voice during the show that I immediately bought this CD (I randomly picked one) the next day. It's a wonderful mix of soft R&B and funkier, more upbeat songs. If you like Toni Braxton, you'll love Deborah Cox.

Soulful Woman,

Deborah Cox is one of Canada's finest talents, you might call her the Canadian Whitney Houston, because their vocal style is similar, in its strengths and how they use their voices as instruments. This is her One Wish album, which has some of her best songs yet on it. "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" is a wonderful R&B/soul song with elements of gospel written all over, where Deborah showcases her vocal ability. "Couldn't We" is a spectacular ballad written by Diane Warren, which should have been a single, it has hit written all over it, and her voice has never sounded better. "September" is a wonderful song that experiments with hip hop and R&B beats which compliment her beautiful voice well. "I Won't Give Up" and "Love Is On The Way" are nice R&B ballads that have a jazzy effect to them. "One Wish" is a nice uptempo R&B song. "One Day You Will" is a nice, but somewhat sad ballad. "I Never Knew" is a wonderful midtempo R&B jam produced by Rodney Jerkins, very powerful. There are also remixes of Nobody's Supposed To Be Here, Things Just Ain't Been The Same and September. A must buy for R&B fans, who also like soul and gospel, because Deborah has made this album which experiments successfully with all of them.
