3.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Little Tale!
I just read this novel, and I had a great time reading it, although I was disappointed with its main focus. The story's plot was scattered from Luke and Charity's relationship to Jonah's condition to Vance's mischief to secrets hidden from the past... I'm not saying that I disliked the book; I just would have liked to hear more romance concerning Luke and Charity. I...

5.0 out of 5 stars A great romance by one of the genre's supersstars, January 26, 2000
This review is from: One Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
In the Washington Territory of 1874, eleven year old Luke Shardlow watches in disbelief as eight-year-old Charity Barham wades into the dangerous water. He barely manages to save the younger child from drowning. Charity explains to a bewildered Luke that she was seeing a magic frog. She grants her rescuer ONE WISH, but he walks away without using it. Not too long after that, Luke's dad is hanged for killing his wife. Luke and his vile half-brother Vance are forced to leave town.

In 1889, Luke is a bounty hunter. His latest effort is to bring Vance, wanted for vicious robberies, to justice. This brings Luke home where he meets the beautiful Charity and an attraction immediately erupts between them. However, she is the daughter of the wealthiest rancher in the region and he is the son of killer. Her father rejects his bloodlines and pushes his daughter to wed her fiancé, neighbor Raoul Montego.

ONE WISH is an entertaining Americana romance that shows why Linda Lael Miller has remained one of the giantesses of industry for the past decade. The story line is crisp and filled with family conflict that ultimately boils down to Charity deciding between her love for Luke vs. her family's expectations. The characters are an interesting group as they interact with each other and the lead protagonists to propel the tale forward. This novel is another triumph for sub-genre fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars one wish is enough to find love, April 3, 2000
This review is from: One Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked this book up on a rainy Sunday morning and was so taken away by it. I had read it all by mid-afternoon. This is another small town where two kids meet by accident. Little Charity offers a kiss or a wish. Young Luke not very excited about a kiss says he will save his wish for another time.

15 years later, they meet again. He was a poor soul with a bad reputation... now grown up, rough, rugged and handsome. Charity is still young at heart looking for magic under every rock.

The characters are very well developed and it is wonderful to read about them falling in love. The test of faith is will they stay together. It has all the details of a western town... cattle ranchers, gunslingers, stubborn father, the saloon, and a gold shipment robbery.

I felt wonderful when I finished because I felt so taken with the idea that the WISH was hanging over them. They did not need it but it helped secure their happiness. If you like this book then you will also enjoy her Springwater series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Yawn., May 24, 2000
This review is from: One Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of those books where the back cover pretty much tells it all. And the book doesn't add anything. The hero is predictable - bad boy trying to make good. The heroine is predictable - little rich girl trying to make good. A brief encounter in their youth and all of a sudden they're star-crossed lovers. I don't buy it. When critics say romance is formulaic, *this* is what they're talking about.

It's not that I disliked any of the characters. I just didn't *like* them. I felt nothing towards them. Hero loves heroine. Yawn. Heroine pines for hero. Ho hum. It was as if Miller was going through the motions without adding any feeling into the book. The only reason I gave it two stars was because I didn't *hate it*. I mean, I didn't throw it at the wall... I just didn't care to turn the page.

When I want to read a great Western, give me a Lorraine Heath over this any day. Then I'll get characters I care about and a storyline that will break my heart. One Wish, on the other hand, was thoroughly forgetable.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Little Tale!, March 7, 2000

I just read this novel, and I had a great time reading it, although I was disappointed with its main focus. The story's plot was scattered from Luke and Charity's relationship to Jonah's condition to Vance's mischief to secrets hidden from the past... I'm not saying that I disliked the book; I just would have liked to hear more romance concerning Luke and Charity. I was also kind of turned off by the love scenes, because they were so overdramatic when told from Charity's point of view. "Stars, moons, universes colliding" is not usually my perception of sexual intimacy--but hey, maybe Luke was an even more exceptional guy than I thought!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Miller!, October 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: One Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
I just adore this book! I have worn out one copy already, and am working on the second. Charity and Luke are characters that I can really care about, and I get caught up in the struggles they face to be together against all odds. There is a minor secondary story, of Molly and Raoul, that I wish would be explored in depth in a follow-up novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wild west fairytale, February 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: One Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my favorite kind of story by one of my favorite authors. Linda Lael Miller has a knack for putting her own special brand of drama and romance together with a familiar theme. ONE WISH is a one-sitting read, filled with all the passion, adventure, tears and cheers a reader could want.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Wish, September 20, 2004
This review is from: One Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
A very good read. I enjoyed the characters Luke and Charity and how they grew up and reunited as adults. I did note some important elements to the story that didn't flow. for example, their first love scene, it didn't say when he undressed, or when and how she first fell in love with him. The story of the secondary character Raoul is a book on its own. He sounds like a great guy and I would like to see a story about him. Overall, I love the father daughter love/hate relationship, I love the character Genesis who was saved from a life of prostitution, and Blaise the wonderful stepmother. Great story overall, a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars My "One Wish" is that there is a sequel...., April 30, 2003
By
This review is from: One Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
I thought that this book was excellent. My mother had bought it (she is into romance novels) and when I had finished a book of my own, she suggested I read it. I was not really enthused to be reading a romance novel but decided to give it a try and I must say I NEVER PUT THE BOOK DOWN, I carried it with me religiously so that I could sneak a read every time I got a chance!

The characters were very likeable and were easy to relate to. Right from the beginning to becoming intrigued with the story and it's characters and right at the second meeting of Charity and Luke - you're hooked! I must say that I don't blame Charity for falling in love with Luke, I think I fell in love with him myself!:)

This is a great read and I recommend it to everyone!....
