Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Casey's (Beep! Beep! Oink! Oink! Animals in the City) sassy mixed-media collages invigorate this outing to a busy humane society. The author/artist combines a forthright first-person text ("Hello. My name is Patricia Casey") with watercolor-and-pencil illustrations jazzed up with photo cut-outs. In a composite self-portrait, for instance, she wears snapshots of Converse high-tops, while a photo of the shelter director sits atop his sketched-in body. The staff and the animals they care for (including William, a fox abandoned as a pup), plus their own pets, go about their business. They prepare food for the cat sanctuary, mend a pigeon's broken leg with lollipop sticks and return a deer to the wild. The stars of the show, of course, are the animals, a winsome assortment of both garden variety (dogs and cats) and the more exotic (a chicken, a hedgehog, a pony and a gecko). Visually syncopated layouts range from full double-spreads to stacked vignettes, all interspersed with chunks of prose on colored backdrops or scraps of ruled journal paper. Well-matched by the vivacious narration ("Roosevelt's tail is so short that when he's happy he wags his whole bottom"), the briskly paced artistic framework sets off the clever collages, which continually surprise and delight. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Photo-collage, watercolor, and pencil illustrations bring alive a day at an animal shelter-specifically, a Wood Green Animal Shelter. The staff members arrive in the morning with their own pets, which include a recuperating fox and a mysterious cheeping box. The people at the shelter care for a variety of animals, prepare the resident creatures for the night, and go home. The illustrations make this ordinary day special. Two photographic kittens nestle in atowel done in watercolors; photographed bowls are piled on a watercolor cabinet; and a photographed man's head appears above an illustrated jacket. The blend is artful; the pictures seem perfectly integrated. The creatures charm with their actions: the box contains a baby pigeon that trots right up the back of a bulldog. The staff will inspire readers with their knowledge and dedication. The hedgehog found in a garden is a hint that this shelter is in Britain, but Casey gives a sense of the work of good animal shelters everywhere. The book is great as a read-aloud, but children will also want to spend close-up time with the art.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Animal Lovers Everywhere....., December 13, 2001
This review is from: One Day at Wood Green Animal Shelter (Hardcover)
Come spend a day with Patricia Casey at Wood Green Animal Shelter. "It's a place in the city where sick, stray, or abandoned animals are taken care of." First let's meet the staff and their own pets who like to come to work with them. Then, let's get the shelter and clinic ready for business...preparing the waiting and examining rooms, feeding and attending to the animals who are staying there because they're sick, injured, or homeless, and need help. Finally at noon the clinic opens and the vet is ready to see patients. When the day is over, the staff feeds and prepares the animals for the night, and then go home, themselves, to eat and rest, because tomorrow is another busy day..... Patricia Casey has written a charming and informative picture book, full of fascinating and engaging stories about both the people who work at the shelter, and the many different animals who've come to stay or live there. Her simple and straightforward text is interesting and entertaining to read, but it's the busy collage artwork that really makes this book stand out. Ms Casey combines photographs, watercolors and colored pencil drawings to create a detailed smorgasbord of visual fun, and youngsters will enjoy poring over the illustrations and finding something new and exciting each time they open the book. Perfect for kids 5-9, One Day At Wood Green Animal Shelter is a clever and innovative story that your little animal lover will want to read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars great artwork, charming, funny..., May 2, 2002

I gave this a present for my 3 yr old nephews and it immediately became one of their favorites. (In fact, I liked the book so much I got another copy for myself.) It is illustrated with a mix of photo-collage and drawings, and almost every page is a story within itself. This is much richer than the simple linear style of many children's books.
Separately, I'm an animal lover, and I love that it shows the shelter as a place of warmth, caring and dedication. A percentage of the book's profits is being donated to the Wood Green Shelter, so when you buy it everybody wins.
