Editorial Reviews

When his friend Erik was ill with cancer, 6-year-old Skyler Pia wanted to cheer him up. So he did what many kids his age could only dream about: he went into his dad’s studio and hosted a radio show featuring tunes from Putumayo Kids CDs. Off the top of his head, Skyler created a charming world music show with international songs and information about the artists and cultures.

Skyler’s parents were so proud of his work that they shared his recording with many friends, including Bonnie Raitt. She suggested that they send the show to Putumayo founder Dan Storper, who loved it so much he decided to release it as specially-priced CD. The result is a benefit CD with all of Putumayo’s proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Skyler picked Make-A-Wish because they helped his friend Erik.

"Music makes people feel good," says Skyler, "and I wanted to help my friend. Now, other kids will be able to enjoy these songs, and kids who are sick will feel better, too."

5.0 out of 5 stars High energy that makes me smile (and sometimes dance), April 23, 2006
This review is from: One World One Kid (Audio CD)
I heard Skylar interviewed on NPR: they played part of a song, and I liked it -- but it was Skylar's energy and enthusiasm for the music that made me run to my laptop and buy the CD. I listen to it over and over: some of the songs make you just JUMP up and start dancing or doing exercises...and it's hard to listen to Skylar talk without smiling. His enthusiasm is infectious.

I don't know what a sick child would make of this, but I DO know that for this adult, it works. If I'm feeling sad, or blah, Skylar's voice - and the songs he's chosen - restores me to cheerfulness. Thank you, Skylar (and the parents who encouraged you and the record company that had the good sense to publish this!. We need more books and records that are truly joyous.

--Libby Koponen, author of BLOW OUT THE MOON
"Libby's joyous times at Sibton Park make you laugh out loud" (child's review; adults gave the book two prizes for excellence in children's books, and Booklist gave it a starred review)

3.0 out of 5 stars great if you don't mind a DJ, January 18, 2007

This review is from: One World One Kid (Audio CD)
I love these Putamayo collections, but this one has a child "DJ" talking over the beginning of every song. While interesting, I use this with my music class, so the talking is disruptive. The music is great though!
