4.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Lot, September 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The One Year Bible for Kids NLT (Paperback)
This was one of three Bibles I purchased over the summer and of those three it is my "favorite." Considering its intended audience of 8-to-12 year olds it is a success. The translation, "New Living" is very readable. The passages are indeed among the most important. The font is easy on the eyes. So far the cover has not curled. The book does not lie flat when opened.
You can get through the Old Testamanet by June. Little attention is given to the minor prophets. There are only three excerpts from Revelation at the end.
There is a very "evangelical" tone as almost every passage has an interpretation which emphasizes the need for Jesus to be your Savior.
I think this would be a good version of the Bible (although not a complete Bible) to develop the habit of daily reading while still being very readable at the target age. I dare say a youngster who can go through this edition several times over a 3 or 4 year period will be very familiar with the most important sections and stories, and ready to move on to a more advanced version.

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT the complete Bible but good selections, April 30, 2011

This review is from: The One Year Bible for Kids NLT (Paperback)
I bought this thinking it was identical to the normal One Year Bible but with kid questions/focus thoughts thrown it. It isn't. This is only a SELECTION of Bible stories/passages. It hits on almost if not every major story in the Bible as well as key verses. At first I was pretty uneasy about the editors choosing which passages they deemed important but as I read it more I realized that what they edited out was exactly what I would edit out to my 5 year old daughter. She does not want to sit through the list of genealogies in the story of Abraham so I would have skipped right to where the story begins. This Bible does that for me already. The downside, of course, is if you wanted to look up a particular passage it might not be there. For example, I wanted to read her the resurrection story out of one of the passages of a particular gospel. This Bible only had one story of the resurrection included and it wasn't the one I wanted to read. One really nice thing about the passage selections is they are very short. It only takes about 2-3 minutes to read each selection for a particular day. Included at the end of each selection/story is a key question essential to Christianity. More than half the times the questions are about salvation and the other half they are about moral issues or other issues essential to the Christian life. The "answer" to the questions is in the form of a quoted verse. So if you are looking for a story book type Bible that actually has the Word directly this is a great choice for your child. If you want the complete Bible though, this would not be the choice for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars They like it, April 20, 2011

This review is from: The One Year Bible for Kids NLT (Paperback)
This week I presented my two boys each with a book of their own. They are 9 and 11 - and they love it!

The first night they read for that day and both were very surprised that they actually enjoyed it. They asked if it would be okay if they went ahead and read the following day as well.. "Sure!!!" My older son even liked it so much he asked to bring it to school to read during recess. That is soooo... not like him - he's a real kinetic kid who's always playing soccer and other sports with his friends.

Anyhow, I am really pleased with this purchase and the response it's gotten from my boys.

This was very helpful to my little brother. He was able to learn much more about the Bible, especially when he listened and compared the verses from his favorite CD,
SCRIPTURE ROCK.
