5.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Saints for All Levels of Interest, January 11, 2006
By
Dominic (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One Year(r) Book of Saints (Paperback)
I developed an amateur interest in the lives of the saints a few years ago, and one of the first (and best) books I bought on the topic was this "One Year Book of Saints." It is what its title says---a clearly formatted (day in the top corner along with page number so you can easily flip to where you want to go) collection of saints for each day of the year; usually the day to which the feast day of the saint in question is attached is used for that day, but not always. Whether you're just learning about the incredible lives of these remarkable people or have spent years studying them, this is a great choice for reference and for enjoyment.

All the most famous saints are covered very well, along with many fairly well knowns and rarities as well. Stevens states the vital stats of the saint (life timelines, etc) at the outset, then gives a full page of information including their early life, contributions to Christianity, canonization dates, and finishes each with the significance and relevance the saint has for us, including a mini-devotion to get you thinking (the "Thought of The Day"). This book combines expert level information and accessible writing that make up a really fun way of learning (or furthering your knowledge) about some of the greatest people to ever live. A must own for any personal collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid collection, January 11, 2007
This review is from: One Year(r) Book of Saints (Paperback)
This is a solid and well-organized collection of stories with a page for each day of the year providing a brief biography of saints of the Roman Catholic church. Though it is primarily a resource for Roman Catholic devotional, it is also an interesting and informative study for anyone interested in church history. The organization makes it easy to read as a devotional or in brief sittings as a history or as a reference for a particular individual. Very well done.

This review is from: One Year(r) Book of Saints (Paperback)
I half-expected a dry, preachy text. This book is wonderful -- it gives real life examples of how we can learn from the examples of the Saints.
