This is one of our toddler's very favorites. Van Fleet's illustrations are amusing, as well as intriguing in the way that he incorporates a part of an animal in the number that is shown with it. The concept is straightforward enough, presenting numbers, colors and animals without excess words or imagery. Yet the presentation is made clever and engaging by the double-folded pages and the surprise of the final two illustrations. This is a book we have given as a gift repeatedly!

Our baby is so active and squirmy now that it's hard to coax him to sit still for books. This book is so entertaining that he cuddles in and pays attention. Every time we say "One yellow..." and then flip open the flap to say "LION!" he roars with laughter. A clever and well-illustrated book.

I am a 61 year old grandmother and I still like this book. I bought my first for my 1st grandchild before he was born. He liked it right away. This book is simple, clever, very colorful and the pictures are charming. Through it children can learn colors, animals, numbers, counting and beginning reading.Tiny babies enjoy looking at the bright colors. Toddlers enjoy counting the animals. Pre-schoolers enjoy reading it to you.
The left hand pages say the number and the color. The right side pages show the number and unfold to become a picture of the animal. It is printed on heavy, shiny stock so it is sturdy and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Thirteen years of our family's grandchildren still enjoy their copies. In March another one will have their chance.

I give this book as a gift to every 1 year old I know. It gets great reviews from both the parent and the child!
When my niece was 2 1/2 she love to "read" the book to me! My newphew took it to preschool on his 'show and tell' day... he wanted to show everyone he knew how to read.
It is a simple book... colors, counting, and animals (the illustrations are great).

This is the only book our son will sit through (time after time). He loves to open the flaps and the illustrations are bright and funny. I had to order another because our first one is almost worn out. Highly recommended.

A delight. My almost one-year-old granddaughter loves the book along with other Matthew Van Fleet creations. Yes, the book features numbers, colors, and animals, but the winning point is the fold-out option as children this age prefer to participate; here they turn the fold out to see the picture. Lovely illustrations too.

My amazing little girl got this for her 1st birthday. It was really nice trying to get her to pay attention while I read. I hope she has many fond memories from this excellent book. Would love for it to last so she can give it to her amazing daughter or son one day.

my 1 yo daughter liked it. simple and educating - numbers 1 to 10, colors, animals are presented in the book. in the end the verse asks the child to find those animals on the picture at the shore which trains attention.

My daughter (13 months) LOVES this book. She likes opening the flaps to see the animal that shows up, making the animal sound and also going through the numbers. She has been learning numbers with it, also colors, and because I speak Spanish I am able to use this book by just translating what it says. My husband reads it in English.
Great book!

This is a great little book. It has lots of animals to count with bright color pictures. The last page folds out with all of the animals climbing all over each other for little learners to count them all over again. it was a favorite of my two almost grown sons.
