Product Description

A unique, handsome, and practical Chinese skimmer with brass wire mesh and a long bamboo handle. There is no substitute for this tool that lifts out pasta, wontons, ravioli, and tortellini from boiling water or fried foods from hot oil. The most handy, versatile, useful, durable, and inexpensive utensil in any kitchen Đ some even use it in the kitty litter box!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Kitchen Tool...Good Price April 16, 2010
I picked up this bamboo strainer over a year ago at a local home show. It was more expensive there but is the very same one. At 6" diameter it is just big enough to be easily used in most sauce pans and pots, without being too small to be useful. The wire basket is made of a good quality stainless steel, and the handle is a solid bamboo that stays cool no matter how much you use it over a steaming hot pot. The wire design is bigger than a screen type mesh which is not really the most ideal thing to use for deep frying. For the small particles of food and crumbs get caught constantly in a screen, and are very hard to clean. This wider mesh design is a far better choice if deep frying a lot is your favor. For me personally, I find this tool indispensable for cooking things like ravioli, and my personal favorite, home made Chinese style dumplings, (yum). Scooping things like macaroni, shrimp, or any other kind of solid food out of a pot with this tool is much easier in many cases than transporting the whole business to a colander. Unlike a colander that requires you dump the whole meal, this skimmer also allows one to scoop out items that are done in a pot, while leaving behind others that have a few more minutes to cook. Overall I have found this tool to be greatly useful in my kitchen since purchasing it.

One last thing to be considered. As was the case at the home show, there are higher priced strainers available on Amazon. Some of them are more expensive for they are bigger, while others owe their higher price directly to a brand name in my opinion.

You might think you will never need or use this strange strainer but if you keep it handy in your kitchen, you will find yourself reaching for it frequently. It strains, scoops, serves, skims, etc.

This bamboo skimmer/strainer is a great tool for the kitchen. The quality is excellent and the price is a steal. I use it to strain raviolis and vegetables, for straining various foods while frying. It cleans up nicely and is so easy to use. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars So useful April 17, 2009

This is an amazingly simple product but it is so useful. No need to dirty a colander when draining boiled potatoes. Get all your fried foods out of the oil in one or two swipes of the skimmer. Great quality product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed with packing of merchandise February 24, 2010
By D B
I ordered this from MV Trading Co. and when I received them bamboo handles were broken. They were packed in a very low quality padded manila envelope which they should have known would not stand up to USPS shipping. I e-mailed MV Trading for a replacement about 2 weeks ago and still have not heard from them. My advise to anyone planning to order from this company, pick another company. I will not order from them again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, Great Price December 26, 2008

This comes with 2 skimmers. Build quality is solid, note that they charged about $7 for shipping, so add that in and it is still cheaper than what I found in shopping around, and these are also hard to find, at least in the Detroit area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect in its simplicity August 23, 2011
A great tool for anyone who does a lot of frying in hot oil the spider scoops out the food without bringing too much of the oil with it.

Six inches in diameter is really the largest you need and four inches works just as well, it gives you control without agitating too much of the remaining oil. It is outstanding in its simplicity and perfection for what it does-from hushpuppies to fish and chips to Asian cooking.

$4.50 is about the right price for these. I would say though that you don't need to buy it mail order. Most good super markets now carry these at about $4.50 and you can pick it up there and save yourself the shipping charges.
