1.0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate - and that's really bad
One Touch Ultra is supposed to be the great solution to the problem of sore fingers. You can draw blood from the forearm, thus saving your fingers. B.B. King even tells us so, and his profession is professional musician and guitarist.

Fine.

None of this matters, though, if the unit isn't accurate in its results. One Touch Ultra is not...

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a needle hater - but I love this meter!, August 27, 2005
This review is from: OneTouch Ultra Blood Glucose Monitoring System (Health and Beauty)
I am new to testing my blood glucose and I have no experience by which to comment regarding the accuracy of the meter as another reviewer has done.

Nonetheless, as I am an avid needle-hater (I can't even watch when I am recieving an injection or having blood drawn from a vein), I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised with the lancet device that accompanies this meter. It is so easy to use and it is virtually painless when used on the side of the finger (I haven't tried anywhere else). It took me 3-4 times before I was able to consistently apply the sample to the strip but that was my problem and it had nothing to do with the meter, strip, or lancet.

I thought I would loathe checking my blood glucose but I don't. I actually look forward to testing to see if I am keeping my numbers in check. For this reason, I feel that I will be much more attentive to my health maintenance.

Another nice feature: You can upload the data from your meter after you have downloaded the manufacturer's free software, but you must purchase an extra cable to do so. (I do not know if you can purchase a generic cable for this purpose, but the meter manufacturer's current price is $30). I have not attempted to use the software yet but I am glad to know that I can keep track of my data beyond 30 days if I wish.

I hope this information helps you to make your choice.

One Touch Ultra is not accurate.

Here is what I mean. You can draw three different samples within a minute of each other from the same finger or forearm stick and get three different results that vary by more than 10%. This should not happen. Blood sugar doesn't change that much that quickly. And if you are taking insulin on a sliding scale, basing the amount you inject on your glucometer's result, a 10% variation in insulin can have serious consequences.

I'm giving up on OneTouch and going back to Bayer. It's results were right in line with my A1c tests. One Touch is not.

It would be a good product if only it worked.

3.0 out of 5 stars Much faster meters now available, November 10, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this meter for a relative so that we could have a single source for our supplies. (I already have the same meter.) The results appear in about five seconds, which is sufficiently fast for our needs.

I'm not so paiently waiting for a non-invasive meter. I understand that several are being developed and should be on the market in a year or so.
