Versatile improvement on an already powerful meter,

This review is from: OneTouch UltraSmart Blood Glucose Monitoring System (Health and Beauty)
I upgraded to the the OneTouch UltraSmart meter after being an Ultra user for 1.5 years after getting diabetes. Being my third meter, I have to say-- without a doubt-- that it is the best I've used to date. The PDA functionality is utterly useful, especially for those who have been unable to commit to a paper logbook or who don't want to spend the money on the proprietary interface cable. The only reason I gave this meter four stars instead of a fifth is because of the case. It is a little firmer than the Ultra case (which I personally like), but for those trying to fit the case in a small jacket pocket it is a tad more difficult. Also (this is the primary reason I didn't add the fifth star) the test strip tube location is horrendous. The way that LifeScan builds the tubes, they have this ridge that juts out which makes it easier to open. For my Ultra case, I could fold the ridge down on the side. For the UltraSmart case, the loop is in a totally different position, which forces the ridge against either the meter or the finger-pricker. There didn't seem to be a "good" position to put the test strip tube in. Overall, however, I still love the meter itself. It's quick and fast. After hours of flipping through options, the battery life still is running strong. Alsom, the backlight is a dream. It comes in handy in places like dark theaters where light is often absent. One final contention I have with the meter is one of the options on the meter is "Help." When I was wondering how to change menu settings, I selected it, and a dialog box popped up telling me to access the manual or LifeScan's website. How useful of a help feature is that? Common sense would have said to either include a help system or don't even put the word in at all. Without the "Help" option, the primary text dialog wouldn't even need to scroll. Just a small critique from a UI (user interface) perspective. Let me reiterate that this is still-- despite the test tube location on the case and the perplexing help feature-- the best meter on the market today.

Good bit of kit,

I already have the European version of the UltraSmart, but needed a US version in mg/dl so that I can calibrate my US continuous glucose monitor.
They are fairly accurate and only take about 5-seconds to provide a reading. I like the fact that only a tiny amount of blood is required and the monitor offers loads of features on the screen like trends etc. All of this can be uploaded to the computer with a cable, which is not included and must be purchased separately! I am sure that there are lots of other good monitors around, but I'm happy with this one. Recommended.

Great functionality! My son is a type 1 diabetic, and this meter allows input for the amount of carbs he takes in and an input for how much insulin he takes! There is also a input for exercise and general health log!!! All in all, this is a powerful meter that is perfect for a type 1 diabetic!!!!!

Best choice for accuracy,

There are many blood glucose meters out there and many available for free. But if you are concerned about accuracy consider this model as the one to choose. Clinical studies published in the journal Diabetes Care pick this meter when patients are going to be checking their own blood sugar levels as part of a study.

A few missing features...,
This review is from: OneTouch UltraSmart Blood Glucose Monitoring System (Health and Beauty)
I bought this meter two days ago and generally agree with all the positive reviews, so I will not repeat the good points here. I have two problems with the meter. One is that you cannot manually add a glucose reading into the meter. This means that you must always use the same meter for all your readings. My 5 yr old daughter with T1D takes her noon reading at school with the nurse on a different meter, so I have no way to input the readings into her Ultrasmart meter, so the averages etc are only based on morning and evening readings. So I still have to keep a written log of her noon readings. Secondly there is no way to get a list of the readings (or food or insulin) except for a list mixing up all types of input. My daughter likes to scroll through her readings on the older One Touch model; that display with big numbers would service a 5 yr old better. Also the meter is complex to use with lots of key presses needed to navigate -- defintely not for a child. In conclusion, the meter is best for adults.

Great monitor. It is an upgrade on my previous monitor, and it was presented to me by my diabetes doctor as the top quality monitor available to diabetics.

I bought a One touch ultrasmart glucose monitor for what seemed like a good deal given what was stated on the product description section. The product description section even now states that the product includes the following - OneTouch® UltraSmart® Blood Glucose Meter, OneTouch® Ultra® Control Solution, OneTouch® UltraSoft® Adjustable Blood Sampler, 10 OneTouch® UltraSoft® Lancets. All I got in the package was the meter. I have solaced myself with - 'you get what you pay for' ! I was mislead by the details provided for the product. Will keep safe distance from this seller !
