If you are interested in a waiter's corkscrew for its compact construction and multifaceted usefulness, but are frustrated by the flimsy ones you often find, this is a an upgrade you should consider. Oneida's is by far the sturdiest I have seen or used and is finished well. The foil cutter is sharp and unlike cheaper models is not serrated so it can be resharpened in the future. This feature also eliminates tearing the foil. All around an excellent tool for people who prefer a waiter's corkscrew.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good portable corkscrew, March 11, 2003

This is not the best inexpensive corkscrew for the home -- that honor goes to the Screwpull. But this IS the corkscrew you want to have with you when you travel or as a home backup. The open screw design means you can safely open old, dry corks without fear of breaking the cork off in the bottle. The foil cutter works well, even on those plastic bottle toppers. This corkscrew does require some practive, however, as you need to line up the screw correctly -- not in the center of the cork but more towards the edge, about halfway between center and edge. On one end is a tiny flip-out blade that can be used for cutting off the foil capsule. On the other end is a lever that serves as a brace that rests on the edge of the bottle to give you leverage when extracting the cork. This makes it easy to open a bottle of wine without setting it down on a tabletop. A very nice design overall, and a good price, too.

I harbor great disdain for tools that break instead of performing their intended purpose. Like my previous corkscrew. It's a matter of design and execution.

This was my mindset as I tried the Oneida Waiter's Corkscrew. I'm pleased with the sturdiness. The screw seems to be well fabricated and is distinctly heavier gauge than I've used before. You feel the screw turn into the cork.

I'm also pleased with the other aspects of design. It fits in the hand. The visuals are clean and simple. It does fine on bottlecaps.

The only thing I would ask for would be a bit more length in the handle. One encounters the occasional tough cork. Having the extra bit of leverage can really come in handy.

Meanwhile I'll be keeping this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple is Sometimes Best, January 5, 2007

I love this corkscrew so much I just ordered a replacement because my last one disappeared...probably taken by the bartender I hired for my holiday party ;).

Seriously, I have had a metrokane rabbit, numerous knock-offs, the wing design and other waiter styles and this one is simply the best. The rabbits broke after one or two stubborn corks and the others would shred older corks or have pieces fall off, etc.

The beauty of this one is the simplicity of its design. The worm is just the right length so you don't go too far into the cork and end up with little bits of it in your wine. The open worm design (as opposed to the solid shaft design) also cleanly removes the entire cork (which is great in older wines) without breakage in one shot.

This corkscrew does require a little more effort to use when compared to a rabbit but its extremely sturdy and very nice looking. Most importantly, it has worked for me hundreds of times, if not a thousand... and it worked everytime, beautifully.

I am a winemaker and serious collector so I've used a lot of different corkscrews. They all have their pluses and minuses, but funny how I always come back to this one. Forget the $50, $100, or even $200 models and go with this one. Besides...the extra $100 you save could be spent on a nice Mondavi Reserve instead :)

I got the style part down as this is well constructed and attractive to the eye, however, nearly every time the heavy gague of the screw will just crush the cork rather than going into it smoothly leaving a cracked cork and dust/bits in the bottle upon removal. I now just keep this around for show and will use my free/promotional corkscrew whenever I need one to actually do something functional. Do not recomend to anyone who wants to uncork a bottle with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huh?, July 31, 2010
This review is from: Oneida Waiter's Corkscrew (Kitchen)
I haven't the faintest idea what people are complaining/talking about. This is like any waiter's corkscrew I've used. This corkscrew is completely identical to the 2 other corkscrews that I've used for years (except the Oneida one is in beautiful stainless steel and the 2 others are brushed metal).

The knife on it is a little dull, but it can be sharpened.

It seems that people seem to either really love it or really hate it. Well, I personally love it and only recommend it only if you're pretty adept at using a waiter's corkscrew. Otherwise you may want to pass on it.

2.0 out of 5 stars flimsy, May 29, 2009

I have this corkscrew and it's a little flimsy. The rivets allow the worm to wiggle from side to side and it just doesn't have good fit and finish and isn't comfortable in the hand. If I were to buy another one I'd probably go with a model that has a nicer handle and a "two-step" feature to make it easier to pull the cork.

does what it's supposed to do. I've had it for a few years now. Still works just fine. No slippage, still sharp. I like it.

This corkscrew is fine for home use, but doesn't work any better than a $2 srew. For restaurant use, the knife is dull, and the screw makes a mess of the cork. However, it does have a nice look.

Neverminding the corkscrew component, the bottle opener's lower teeth aren't long enough to maintain a solid grip on the edge of a bottlecap. I could open a bottle faster with my housekey or a flathead screwdriver!
