...the shaker base won't fit over a pint glasss. Thus, you have to use the top with it all the time. The top does not fit well enough to use on a [pint glass either. The base should be a wider diameter for the ideal shaker...

Other than that, it is very nice and well worth the price. I can live with using it as a set, so my comment above is for those of you who are...

If you want a great little martini shaker without the outrageous price that some are charging, this is your device.

It's simple, elegant and comes with a built-in strainer at the top. It seals tight for shaking up your martini du jour and serves about four to five large-glassed martinis.

It's also Oneida, and my experience has been that they make decent quality products. So far, it's proven a great purchase.

I like to mix parts vodka with apple pucker and a splash of tonic water to make one of New York's famous apple martinis. Slice up a wedge of granny smith apple and plunk it into your glass and voila, you have it.

The only negative I'd have to say about it is that it's sometimes difficult to get the lid off the top for replenshing and cleaning. But if it wasn't sealed tight you'd have martini all over your kitchen/living room as you shook, so it's a bearable negative. To get it open, you have to pry around the sides of it evenly with your thumbs until it pops loose.

Otherwise don't question the cheap price. This is a great deal, and a great martini shaker.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great shaker, especially when you look at the price, July 1, 2003

I purchased this shaker a few months ago, and we use it quite regularly. I will disagree with another reviewer and say that I don't find the top impossible to get off, but sometimes you do have to work it back and forth. But, when you look at the prices of other cocktail shakers, and factor in the quality of this one, I think having to work the top back and forth is worth the money you'll save. I'd much rather have a tight fitting lid than my drink all over my hands.

One feature I like is that the strainer/lid is deep enough that when you remove the lid, your drink isn't still spilling over the sides.

If you are shopping for a cocktail shaker, then you know how ridiculously priced they can be. Don't think that because this one is less expensive that it is of less quality. This is a sturdy, well-made product.

Our last shaker was plastic and broke after a few short months of regular use. This stainless steel shaker certainly won't have that problem. It is sturdy and attractive at the same time. We use it for much more than martinis, and have certainly not been dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Casual Home use, June 20, 2004

I bought this a month ago for home use, and find it fabulous. My only complaint and reason for giving it 4 stars is that it is a little bit large and therefore you can't just fill it up on something like a Margarita or you'll have too much sour. I wouldn't want to use this at work! And, being myself a bartender, I would like to say that I have used a good number of different shakers, and have never seen one that had a lid that just popped off, shakers don't do this. Lids stick because the air inside compresses due to the cold and seals the lid tightly. I have also never seen one that screwed off. It is impractical anyways, it is not hard to see if you're on or off. Anywho, hope this is helpful. Happy shaking!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Classic Martini Shaker, July 5, 2001

A shaker like this is not meant for cream drinks and other concoctions; this should be used for pure liquor drinks, such as martinis and manhattans. I can hear Sean Connery in my mind every time I get this out...."very dry, shaken - not stirred."

It has an 18 ounce capacity, which will chill martinis for two quite easily. The top is a two stage affair; the main part has a strainer built in so your "neat" martini will be ice free, the small cap also doubles as a 1-1/2 ounce jigger and will stand up on the counter as you pour. The stainless steel is highly polished on the outside and brush finished inside.

One of my favorite recipes for this contraption is Chocolate Martinis for two: fill the cup about two-thirds full of ice cubes; measure two capfuls of vodka and one capful of white cream de cocoa; shake for about 20 seconds and pour through the strainer top into two martini glasses. You can add a cherry garnish in this martini if you like. After about two of these, the cold steel will be no bother; if it is, a dampened (for grip), white napkin wrapped around the cup is a genteel way to insulate your hand from the cold concoction within.

Whether you are entertaining the neighbors or just "007," this will be a handsome and useful addition to your collection of mixicological accouterments.

Sometimes a cocktail shaker is just a cocktail shaker! Which describes this simple and elegant solution to martini making. It's stainless steel, and (surprise!) it does get cold during proper use. Has a convenient built in strainer and you can crank out the martinis at a feverish pace. Looks nice just sitting on the bar, too. It's the epitome of the basic-yet-functional 20 buck cocktail shaker. Salud!

I purchased this shaker a couple of years ago and have given it a lot of use. First let me say that this is a very good shaker and performs very well. I read some of the other reviews and I have not encountered any problems with the lid sticking or the shaker leaking. It performs as advertised and is a good value for the money. The only drawback might be if you want to make cocktails for more than two people at a time. It's a bit small for that IMO but if you are mixing for one or two folks at a time, it's the perfect size. Another plus is that after many washings (by hand only), the finish has held up like it was brand new. Along with performance and functionality, it is a durable product as well.

This shaker looks very attractive and works well, EXCEPT that the removable top invariably fails to be removable. Once the shaker gets cold, the metal contracts and the pieces stick together, making it a real pain to get the two pieces back apart for washing or for "martinis, round 2"...and the problem doesn't abate once the shaker warms up---once it's stuck, it's stuck. It's true that if you take it apart IMMEDIATELY it doesn't stick, but I forget to do so at least 50% of the time (usually when there are guests present and I have other things to think about). I have had this shaker for about 3 months and make martinis pretty regularly, but I'm tired of messing with it: I've decided to buy another shaker and give this one to GoodWill!

It's just the right size, seems a little more substantial than other stainless steel shakers I've held, and I haven't had any of the hard-to-open-once-you've-made-a-cocktail problems.

All cocktail shakers work in pretty much the same way. However, one thing you might want to consider is how cold stainless steel gets when you're shaking ice in it! I've had to run warm water over my hand after making a few drinks with one of these. An oven mit also works, but creates quite a humourous image for your guests. Glass and plastic don't conduct the cold as fast, so you might want to consider one of these options if you find the cold troublesome.
