4.0 out of 5 stars Wish I could give it 3-1/2 stars - okay but not what it was
This is the third time I have purchased this pattern, the first two times having been a number of years ago. It is very similar to my sterling pattern, International's 1810; but as the price of silver increased over the years, I could not afford to add to my sterling. Boston Colonial was attractive and affordable for our growing family.

BUYER BEWARE! These are being offered at a low price because they are actually 18/0 stainless steel, not 18/8 as Amazon specs incorrectly state.

The numbers 18/0 and 18/8 refer to the percentage of content of chromium and nickel. To be classified as stainless steel, the metal must contain at least 11% chromium (no nickel required). Stainless steel used in cookware is normally 18% chromium and 8% to 10% nickel.

Low end stainless steel cookware, mixing bowls, stockpots and accessories are usually 18/0, which are usually not highly polished, and could be subject to some rust spotting.

I went ahead and purchased it again in spite of negative comments here because I needed it for a visit from children and grandchildren. The set is basically attractive, and I have found that differences between the new set and my old set are not readily apparent in normal use. However, I agree with those who are disappointed in the downgrade of this pattern. Pieces feel lighter, particularly the knives, and the effort to make the knife handles look as hefty as their predecessors is unfortunate.

I have had the set only about a month so can't really assess its durability. However, so far I don't notice many scratches; and I am washing it in the dishwasher without seeing any corrosion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Box says 18/0 not 18/8, January 2, 2008

I ordered this set because Amazon specs say it's 18/8 steel. However, when I received it, the box says 18/0 which is much lower quality. The pieces look really nice, and I wonder if maybe the box is wrong. Can't know so I'm sending it back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Same great quality, slightly different design, May 2, 2008

I purchased the same style about 10 years ago and love it but I needed more silverware so I ordered another set.

The new set is still the same high-quality but the design is ever so slightly different. The knife handle is narrower and some of the contours on the handles are more contoured than before.

So don't expect to match your old set of Colonial Boston stuff perfectly, but it mostly matches. It all looks the same in the drawer. :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Buy only if you like rust, February 17, 2011

This review is from: Oneida Colonial Boston 45-Piece Stainless-Steel Flatware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I purchased this set because I loved the design and trusted the Oneida brand. When I got the set, I liked the look, feel and weight of the flatware. Unfortunately, I noticed quality problems immediately, since three of the pieces had a black residue on them that would not wash off. It got worse, when after only a few weeks of use, about half the pieces had started to rust. This wasn't tiny little rust spots, but a significant amount of rust on many of the pieces.

I ended up exchanging the set for another one, thinking that I just got a bad one. After only a couple of weeks, this second set also started to rust. I treated both sets with care. Everything is hand washed with warm water, mild dish detergent, and a soft sponge immediately after meals, then dried with a cotton towel. There is absolutely no excuse for why this flatware should be rusting if it was real stainless steel.

It's too late to return these now, so I'm stuck with them. That said, I'm not going to eat out of rusty spoons, so I'm now looking to get me a another set that's actually made of real stainless steel. I'm giving it 2 starts instead of 1 only because it is a really nice set...before it starts to rust.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheaper quality than they used to be, November 30, 2010

I purchased this set to expand the Oneida Colonial Boston set I bought about 8-10 years ago. I needed something in time for Thanksgiving that would be enough settings for the number of people I had coming and was glad to see that they still made this pattern.

While the pattern does match quite well with my old set there are some differences. The new set is lighter in weight and there are subtle design differences, specifically the decorative carving on the knife handles is slightly deeper and the edges of the spoon bowls are thicker with a blunter edge. We used them for Thanksgiving dinner and then threw them in the dishwasher, since it said they were dishwasher safe, and we've always washed our old set in the dishwasher since we got it.

Unfortunately, after that one use we found rust spots on the knife blades. They did rub out - this time, but I am wary since they have only been used and washed that one time (other than the initial time of course! That was dishwasher as well, no rust spots), and the dishwasher was run immediately after dinner, so it's not like they sat around dirty for a week or something.

Time will tell, but I plan to stick to using my old set for everyday use and only using the newer set when having a lot of people over.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Silverware, December 20, 2008

I need more silverware. Got tired of washing them everyday when all of them got dirty. Pattern is a little different from the one I bought years ago - mainly the knives - but not that noticable. Make sure you clean the knives - during the manufacturing process there is some black stuff in the creavices of the teeth.

I picked these out on amazon back in december and put them on my wish list. I did receive them for christmas. They are very nice and have so far held up to a the better part of 2 dozen dishwasher cycles without any sign of flaws.
The spoons feel a little large to me, but they are not bad once you get used to them.
They feel sturdy and are easy to hold on to.

1.0 out of 5 stars flatware from China, November 25, 2011
This review is from: Oneida Colonial Boston 45-Piece Stainless-Steel Flatware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I received this set and returned it within a month. It started rusting. I finally went to the Silver Superstore on line. They have a line of flatware that is made in the USA. Unfortunately, after Oneida closed their USA plant, it has become harder to find flatware that isn't made in China, Vietnam or Indonesia. Check out silversuperstore.com. They have a whole section of "not made in China" flatware.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rust and tarnish already, June 14, 2011

This review is from: Oneida Colonial Boston 45-Piece Stainless-Steel Flatware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I've always loved Oneida flatware. Our last 2 sets began to show signs of age... after 15+ years. To replace them, I ordered 2 of this set on April 30, 2011, less than 2 months ago. A few weeks after we received the shipment we noticed areas of rust on the knife handles and tarnishing on the knife blades. Amazon policy says it requires original packaging for returns, which we didn't retain, so we are stuck with flatware that is embarrassing to have on our table.
