Book Description

Throughout recorded history, Oneida Lake has played an important role in the Central New York saga. Colonial travellers and traders used it for a primary water route, Native Americans fished it for survival and, in more recent years, its region has served as a major source for commercial and sport fishing, resort development, agricultural and lumbering activity and, of course, cross state navigation.
In this volume, Jack Henke gives the reader a brief history of all the named places around Oneida Lake--each point, bay, shoal, island and community is included.

Currently, he thoroughly enjoys teaching social studies at Brookfield Central School and, of course, revels in Oneida Lake's marvelous Summers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oneida Lake's History, June 30, 2011

This review is from: Oneida Lake: "The Only Happiness" Place Names and History (Paperback)
Oneida Lake was once referred to as the 'fishiest lake in the united states' in a prominent outdoor magazine. For all central New York fishing enthusiast it is known to be the place for walleye and yellow perch. While many know about this side of Oneida Lake and it's many recreational uses, the history of the region and the commerce on the lake is not well known.
This is a nicely written book on the history of Oneida Lake and the counties that border it. It covers many facets including the hotels and places on the lake which were prominent travel destination for vacationers and families from around the state in it's prime days. The book also covers the history of the founding fathers and the local politics as the region changed though the last centuries. It is nicely organized by counties surrounding the lake, has fine historical photos and is indexed well. If you want to know the history of this region and the lake it is a very good reference book and I'm very glad it was written.

Since I grew up on the north shore of Oneida Lake, I enjoyed reading about its history. I was aware of some of it but was surprised by what I did not know. It brought back fond childhood memories of swimming,
boating, and ice skating on the lake. My family members were avid fishermen even in the winter and we had many fish dinners my favorite
of which were the winter walleye pike.
