I must admit I was apprehensive about buying an electric pressure cooker. We have all heard the horror stories about the stove top cookers blowing up, but curiosity got thee best of me. When my Oneida pressure cooker arrived I eyed it with caution. Then I cooked up some rice. How hard could that be? I plugged it in, set the cook time, and ran out of the kitchen. I stood near the doorway and listened---SILENCE. I walked up to the cooker, placed my ear next to it---SILENCE. Then the beep went off signalling the 6 minute cooking time was completed. After a cool down, I opened the lid to perfectly done rice. BEAUTIFUL!
I now realize the value of pressure cooking. Less time in the kitchen. A whole lot less power used in cooking i;e Spaghetti Sauce (20 minutes versus 3-4 hours simmering on the stove top), Soup in 15 minutes versus 1-2 hourrs on the stove top, Chili in 6 minutes. How could I NOT have had this wonderful cooker when I had 4 energy filled boys to feed at home? They are all grown now, but I still treasure my time and labor saved. The older you get the less patience you have with cooking. Wait till I tell my sister she can make her stuffed cabbbage in 20 minutes versus 3-4 hours on the stove top/oven! She will flip! Lovin my cooker, Jeanne

I've never owned a pressure cooker before. I read and read about other cookers and settled for this one after all my research. I am very pleased. The only issue I have is I tend to cook in bulk. Every meal I make in this baby pushes the limits of the capacity and I find myself running another cycle on the rice button, etc. to get the food cooked. Even so, I think it still saves so much time. I bought a steamer/rice cooker several years ago and it isn't fit to use as a boat anchor...can't say that about this pressure cooker. Roasts, chicken, rice, all of it turns out great.

First off, the photo is a bit deceiving, you don't get any extras with the refurbished unit, no scoop, no measuring cup, and no manual- yes no manual at all. If I hadn't have found the manual online in pdf format I would probably have sent it back.
The unit is well made, and works perfetly. The things I don't like are how the presets "chicken, ribs, etc.." don't let you put in a weight, and when they are running they don't show a timer... will it be done in 20 mins or 40 mins? Who knows?! The cake function is a gimmick, I had to run the cycle 3 times to get my cake done... at that point 3 cycles was too many and 2 wasn't enough... would have been much better off just using the manual time or sticking it in the oven. It is great for cooking rice. Ribs need a lot longer than I would have thought.... but still nice to have then relatively quickly compared to baking. Definately an energy saver. I still need a lot of practice but its not a "set it and forget it" type of unit. You have to read the "not included" manual, and experiment to find the true cooking times. |
