Needs a basic fix or two,

The product cuts well and makes french fries pretty well. I bought this for cutting potatoes and all remarks are based on that use. The problem I had with it is the reverse end of the cutting blade... It's not flat to the slide bed when installed for normal (non-crinkle) cutting. This means that when you have made a cut and are sliding the food back up the ramp for the next cut (the back stroke), the bulged up crinkle blade grabs the food and grates a bit of it off adding a lot of drag. This would also make very thin slices impossible because they always have one side damaged by the curved crinkle blade. If you know someone with a bench vise and thick leather gloves the blade could probably be corrected. Always be careful when handling the blade for any reason, it is very sharp.
Another issue that might cause a problem for people cutting thick slices is the location of the knob that holds the main blade in place... dead center so your thick slices will run right into it as they are being cut. This increases the force you must use and damages your thick slices. All in all I would not buy this product if I had this information in advance, no reviews where available when I ordered. I am a handy person and have corrected the first problem above and I think I can live with the second issue, so I will not be returning the item. I really expected better from Oneida, but you do get what you pay for in the end. The only mandolins I have ever used were restaurant grade and you can expect to pay at least $100 for one of those models. If you plan on using the slicer a lot, spend the money for a good, well-reviewed product.

It takes practice, and you have to read the directions.,

The problems described by the other reviewers are avoidable if you read the instructions and make the adjustments necessary.
I was highly frustrated with this when I first bought it -- thought it was just another gadget that doesn't deliver. But with practice, I'm making lovely matchstick fries with it. I recommend, but you do need to practice and not give up.

Solid mandolin slicer.,

The several negative reviews made me wonder if I had made a mistake in buying this Oneida mandolin slicer. On the contrary, I find that it is a fine tool, very sharp, cuts and shreds well, is VERY sold when being used and feels safe and secure. The adjustments are good and do get you to a fine "tune" without much work. Looks good too and stores easy. Cuts very thin and also far thicker than several other mandolins I looked at. I like it. I like it fine. My only criticism is that the so-called manual is really nothing more than an illustration with some cursory remarks; it does not come close to providing an adequate guide for some potential uses (several other mandolins actually have YOU TUBE videos, and I probably will consult them and see if they can help with refinements).

I have wanted a mandoline for a long time, but did not want to pay a lot for something I was not sure I would use. This one is inexpensive and I was very impressed the first time I used it to slice potatoes and onions. It sliced potatoes with no effort the first time out. I am waiting to see how long the blades stay sharp. If you are a klutz you might find the mandoline scary at first, but for the reasonably coordinated and mechanically sensible it is a great tool. Get one.

Works Fine,
This review is from: Oneida Polished Black Mandolin Interchangable Slicer (Kitchen)
This slicer lives up to its name. It slices veggies perfectly every time. The safety handle is not easy to use, and it won't slice some items - tomatoes, for example. However, for the money, it does what I want.

Americas Test Kitchen gave it a failing grade - I agree,
This review is from: Oneida Polished Black Mandolin Interchangable Slicer (Kitchen)
Wish I had seen the Kitchen mandolin product review on Americas Test Kitchen before I purchased this. I am a reasonably good cook and do a lot of it. The Oneida mandolin is made of flimsy steel. The blade and table are supported at the edges, any pressure away from the support edges changes the thickness of the cut. The steel is not good quality and so dulls noticably after only a few days usage.

Spend a bit more and get something decent,

I bought this mandolin because it was middle of the road as far as price goes (not $75 and not $10). It's fairly sturdy (the only reason for the 2 stars), and the guard slides well. However, the blades are not nearly sharp enough. First try was an onion, and it would not even make decent slices at 1/4 inch. It mangled the layers of the onions and did not cut all the way through even once before ripping that layer off. Did not matter which way I placed the onion on the guard. Forget harder veggies like carrots or celery. Every slice was broken off at the back edge rather than cleanly cut through.
I recommend going with something a little higher quality even if it costs a bit more. I bought this at Target and it will be going back tomorrow.

It Slices not Dices,

I've always wanted a Mandolin because I enjoy cooking but especially like making a nice presentation on the plate & a Mandolin allows you to have nice percision, identical cuts . Picked this brand because I have other Oneida products which are of good quality. Unfortunately, I hardly ever use it because it is a little cumbersome. It just sits in the box in my cabinet. Perhaps a different brand would have been better.

Dangerous!,
This review is from: Oneida Polished Black Mandolin Interchangable Slicer (Kitchen)
The Oneida slicer I received had a serious design or manufacturing problem. When the rear support was swung into place it put the slicer at an angle that prevented the front rubber feet from contacting the counter top. This allowed the slicer to slip and slide and made it very dangerous to use. I returned this item and bought the Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Plus, which works great.

mandolin,
This review is from: Oneida Polished Black Mandolin Interchangable Slicer (Kitchen)
the mandolin is a handy tool, however it was not as easy to use as it looked, It took several tries to get a decent slice and the end of each slice tend to break off rather than slice off.
