(I had to look this up.... Oneirology is the study of dreams.)

Take one look at the cover of "Oneirology" and you know it's gonna be a great album. I believe that today's hip hop needs more art, more poetry, and more intellegence (and less Lil' Wayne). Leave it to the CunninLynguists to always IMPROVE the current hip hop climate.

Like last year's melancholy masterpiece, Present Kno: Death Is Silent, "Oneirology" shows TREMENDOUS growth in Kno's production. For the most part, his beats are slow and deliberate -- even magical. Do you remember the first time you heard "The Park [Remix]" on "Strange Journey, Volume Two"? (It wasn't produced by Kno...but it was other-worldly).

And that's how I'd describe the production on "Oneirology." It's not a "southern sound" like Devin the Dude's stuff -- but rather, it's a universal sound. (I know, I know -- that sounds cheesy, but it's TRUE.) Kno's amazing production shows growth and increased depth.

The lyrics are very introspective. Early CunninLynguist tracks were funny (almost silly)...but these tracks are on another level. They didn't write in order to be funny -- they wrote in order to be profound. Profundity in hip hop, you say? No -- That can't be! Not since the 90s....

Not every track is "profound," but that's not bad. "Get Ignorant" is a perfect example. It's not "introspective" because it's a diss song, but it's well-writen nonetheless.

Listen carefully to tracks like "Darkness (Dream On)" and "Shattered Dreams" and you'll understand why the album is called "Oneirology." "Embers," the closing track, is sad, but quite beautiful. Again, LISTEN carefully. Nothing is redundant; nothing is filler. Even the interludes (which, by definition, are "fillers") fit well with the oneirology theme!

"Oneirology" is fantastic in every way -- an exceptional follow-up to Kno's "Death is Silent." The beats are SMOOTH, the ryhmes are DOPE, and honestly, I can't say enough about this album. It's a must-own for both hip hop heads and fans of beautiful, you're-not-gonna-find-it-on-the-radio music.

Like Piece of Strange and Dirty Acres, "Oneirology" will STIR your emotions. This isn't hip hop -- this is BETTER THAN HIP HOP (and I LOVE hip hop).

Trust me.

Hip Hop On Another Level March 22, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is CunninLynguists' 5th album, and it had taken their style to a new level of production and lyricism. Kno has created some of the most amazing beats I've ever heard in hip hop or elsewhere. The lyrics are relevant, real, and always on point. This is a concept album that revolves around the subject of dreams. The production is more synth-heavy than CL's previous releases, but this is not a bad thing in any way. I think it's a nice change, and gives the album a "dreamy" feel that's evolved since Kno's "Death Is Silent" last year. This is a hip hop album that makes you feel like you're jamming the freshest modern beats, but are in some 60's psychedelic era. It may sound a little strange, but once you hear it, you'll understand and love it!

Some of my favorite songs are:

Darkness (Dream On)
Hard As They Come
My Habit
Shattered Dreams
Enemies With Benefits
Embers

An amazing album from one of the most talented and unique hip hop groups that ever did it! If you're sleeping on this album or CunninLynguists, you're missing out...
