DAVE HOLLAND SOLO,OUTDOES HIMSELF,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ones All (Audio CD)
Virtuoso bassist Dave Holland's 93' recording "Ones All" is just that, you can hear him giving his all on each cut.Not by emoting or being flashy, though he obviously has amazing technique, but by playing straight from the heart. Some of the highlights among the eleven numbers released here are a beautiful rendition of Mingus'"Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", here called "Pork Pie Hat". Followed by Holland's own "Jumpin'In" a bright uptempo tune with a pretty "tapped" harmonics middle section.John Coltrane's "Mr.P.C."[Paul Chambers, bassist] receives a lively treatment here, you may forget there is only one musician playing."Little Girl I'll Miss You" by Bunky Green, a nice ballad is performed first in a haunting arco style, then pizzicato."Blues For C.M."[Charles Mingus]is a gently rocking blues melody that wanders into some interesting places."Pass It On" written by Holland and dedicated to master drummer Ed Blackwell has the feeling of something he might do, in fact it's easy to imagine Blackwell playing along. He finishes this great set of solo bass playing with a lovely version of Billie Holiday's "God Bless The Child"."Ones All" is even better than Holland's other solo bass recording "Emerald Tears" which was also very good, it captures the rich tone and deep throb of Hollands bass better than the much lauded ECM sound on "Tears".A thoroughly satisfying listening experience you'll enjoy more each time you hear it, honest!

Just wanted to put my two cents in -- this is a magnificent CD, and Dave Holland is a wonderful, wonderful bassist. Gorgeous, rich, resonant sound. Full and satisfying. Agree with earlier reviewer -- this outing is more compelling than "Emerald Tears." I can't believe this is out of print. They should completely revamp the dreary cover and get this released again ASAP. You might think an entire CD of bass solos would be difficult to sustain, but on several tunes he's got wonderful funky rhythms and counterpoint going, and the playing is consummate. This is a real treasure. Highly recommended.
