5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Entertaining and Deeply Touching
M. Hill is a great writer! You feel like you are there with her, like a fly on the wall, as she tells of her devastating and delighting encounters with the opposite sex. It's hilarious at times. I laughed so hard! I couldn't put the book down. In it is a lesson to be treasured by all. Read this book! You'll feel as though you found a new friend! BRAVO!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't
After reading all the reviews here I bought this book and eagerly awaited its arrival. I persevered for around 40 pages and decided I'd never read anything so poorly written before. I'm no writer and probably never will be but it's not too many books I decide to abandon a few chapters in. Her constant use of phrases such as 'Don't get me wrong' and 'Don't misunderstand...

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!! "The Ones That Got Away: A Dating Memoir", July 10, 2008
This review is from: The Ones That Got Away: A Dating Memoir (Paperback)
What a great recommendation I was given to read "The Ones That Got Away". A brilliantly written biography of M. Hill's dating memoirs. Incredibly witty, light, easy, entertaining reading. I loved it! This may be M. Hill's first published book but mark my words, "We'll see more from this talented author." Read it and you will agree. I do not know one woman who wouldn't enjoy this book. Men, I dare you to read it. It very well could be a good source of reference for anyone on the subject of dating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, July 2, 2008
This review is from: The Ones That Got Away: A Dating Memoir (Paperback)
I found this book absolutely delightful. Once I started reading, I could not put this book down. I find the author's sense of humor amazing. Her ability in the way she is able to use analagies is what makes her such a wonderful writer. Hope she comes out with another one.
If you only have time to read one book this summer, let this be the one!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't, September 16, 2011
This review is from: The Ones That Got Away: A Dating Memoir (Paperback)
After reading all the reviews here I bought this book and eagerly awaited its arrival. I persevered for around 40 pages and decided I'd never read anything so poorly written before. I'm no writer and probably never will be but it's not too many books I decide to abandon a few chapters in. Her constant use of phrases such as 'Don't get me wrong' and 'Don't misunderstand me' sounded amateurish and out of place. She even rambles on about some night on the beach and finishes it with 'this particular evening isn't really pertinent to the story I am telling...' So why bother telling it? The writing doesn't flow and feels like a teenage diary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Olympic Reading!, November 25, 2008
This review is from: The Ones That Got Away: A Dating Memoir (Paperback)
If there were an Olympic Event for speed reading - I would certainly have brought home the gold! This book was the kind you just can't put down - life kind of stops and everything else takes a back seat. Although my family was happy when I finished it and became a functioning wife and mother, I must admit, it was lots of fun being "away"!!

A fun book all the way - through the ups and downs (chapter 14, page 116 was by the far the best "down" of all!!), trials and tribulations - this is a winner!!

By all means, grab a copy and enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! Really Fun!, November 21, 2008
This review is from: The Ones That Got Away: A Dating Memoir (Paperback)
After attempting to gain an insight into the woman's psyche; Im 100% postitive that I am even more confused than I was before I read "The One's That Got Away"-A Dating Memior. It's nice to see the view from a different perspective. Just in case Women in the world were still wondering...There are still MEN out there who like romance and also have BALLS. YOU NEVER KNOW. I would recommend this book again and again.
Great Job M.Hill!

5.0 out of 5 stars A little familiar!, September 12, 2008
This review is from: The Ones That Got Away: A Dating Memoir (Paperback)
I purchased the book as something different to read. Was I ever surprised! While some of the dating anecdotes are reminiscent of my younger years, others were ones that I wish I could have experienced! I just couldn't put the book down, whether it was accompanied with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine! Recommend to everyone and anticipate the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll feel you have a new friend and comrade..., August 28, 2008

This book was also highly recommended and am I glad...I truly felt like I was on a trip with an old friend ! M. Hill does a superb job of relating her life story with all the luscious detail we all crave. Those of us who had been through the similar highs and lows of the wild and wacky world of dating will find it particularly funny, poignant and dead-on ! I also grew up in the same area as the author and found reading about her adventures in our old haunts an additional treat. I also really appreciated M.'s message that choosing to being on your own (rather than coupling up with the wrong person just to avoid being alone)is really the better choice. This author's easy, inviting, hilarious style will have you wanting more. I was sorry it had to end ! Thanks, M.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just So-So, January 10, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Ones That Got Away: A Dating Memoir (Paperback)
I'm pretty neutral on this one. Like one of the other reviewers, I was tempted to put the book aside after being disappointed from the start. But I did read it from beginning to end. It didn't strike me as courageous, shocking or funny. Plus I'd prefer to learn the author's name on the first, not last, page. I didn't feel at all connected with her, knowing virtually nothing about her.

As another reviewer stated, the writing feels immature. It's fraught with unnecessary verbiage: statements like "This will shock you." As a double disappointment, I wasn't shocked by whatever was supposed to shock me.

I am further disheartened that the author hopped from one married man to the next, knowing one was a father of two kids. She didn't express remorse until she sensed his pulling back; that's ego-centered "remorse," not sincere misgivings. This makes women look bad. Many or most of us would not in fact consider cheating with a married man - especially one with kids.

All in all, it's a decent example of a dating memoir (there are few to choose from) and I appreciate the non-fairytale ending messages.

Look elsewhere, though, for a book of substance. I suggest you let this one get away.
