5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept and Non-Stop Action
All the 7/10 reviews that I've seen made me more surprised with this game. I would give more like a 9/10 for the PS2 edition. It brings an interesting concept with many new features, merging Tomb Raider with a fighting game while keeping the anime style. Graphics are nice, not overwhelming, but appropriate. The game serves it's purpose, it's fun!

Imagine being able to do some kick-... kickboxing while desarming your opponent, taking his gun, and using it to finish the rest. She even have a few insults in bank for them! You learn moves as you go further in the game, as well as obviously finding new guns.

Ah, the so called weird controls... Yes, it's definitely different since they even found a good use for BOTH analog stick (pretty uncommon). Then again, you don't have a keyboard with ALT and CTRL either so they had to find something. All in all, I do not find that an issue but rather a challenge that can be overcomed quickly by practicing.

The difficulty of the game (easy, medium, hard) is well-balanced and should appease everybody.

This game is definitely something worth looking into on the PS2 at the moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only fun if you cheat, December 21, 2006

OK. This game is very difficult if you try to use the PS2 controller. I bought this game new, and after hating it for the first 6 hours, tried to sell back to a gamestop. They offered me 50 cents! So, I kept it. On a shelf collecting dust. This was back in 2005.

Fast Forward to Oct 2006. While searching online for a joystick for my PS2, I found the MaxShooter keyboard adapter for the PS2. You plug a keyboard and mouse into this little box, and it [the box] emulates the PS2 controller. So, I bought this little device ($20). You have to program it, but that takes all of about 2 minutes. Anyways, I'm getting a little off subject. The point is I bought a MaxShooter mouse and keyboard adapter for the PS2, and programmed it to play ONI.

OH WOW! It this game ever fun now! HOLY COW, The graphics are awsome, Konoko's moves are mind blowing. The fluidity of her moves are so amazing. This has to the best game ever! The story is unparalled to anything I've ever watched. There are entire cities that you can walk around in!!!

I MEAN, THIS GAME ROCKS...so long as you don't use the PS2 controller.

So, if you have this game and hate it, invest the $20 in the maxShooter mouse and keyboard adapter for your PS2, and I guarantee that this game will knock your socks off.

PROS: Huge levels, lots of puzzels (you have to lure your enemies otherwise they overwhelm you), great use of weapons. Konoko's fighting style is totally awsome. You have an advantage in that you can see around corners which makes sneaking up on enemies so much easier. Riveting story. With friggin' awsome cutscenes. AND, some people have been giving this game smack about being so realistic...well, now the realism is the best thing about it. I especially like how you can side step enemies, swirl around behind them, and beat the living snot out of them. OH, AND SPOILER. YOU LEARN A TORNADO KICK THAT IS SO COOL

CONS: There is one level where you are at an airport, the poor PS2 can barely handle that level. Everything moves more or less in slow-mo because the PS2 is having to render the airplanes. its just too much for the PS2 to handle. Sometimes the screen gets really dark. I mean, I have to turn off all my lights just to see what's on the screen. But that only happened twice

BIGGEST CON: the game is udderly impossible with a regular PS2 controller. You have to buy this MaxShooter adapter

So, with that being said. I hope more people try this game (with this Max Shooter). If you have trouble programming the device, I can email you the instructions on what I did. You can try it out and if you like it fine, else, also fine. So, here's my email. kearney_taaffe@hotmail.com

When I first played this game, I was like, "whoa." I think the graphics are good but sometimes slow down making it difficult to fight during combat. Each level has an objective to keep you motivated. while playing you can press X and Konoko will shout a phrase such as "You're going to get beat by a girl!" at the opponent. She occasionaly has a wardrobe change. The game has many plot twists. A major disappointment to me was the lack of music. During a dramatic part, some music will play, my favorite being these wild sounding violins playing. It sounds really cool. The anime look contributes to the game's overall look. The 3-D characters look a little strange. The only thing that really bugs me is the painfully long time during loading and when the dialogue gets to be a very long conversation. I really enjoy the game. Sometimes, the second time around something special may happen, like a boss may change to something irregular. That's a cool factor that'll keep you coming back for more!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's fun, but no garentees that you'll like it, June 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Oni (Video Game)
A lot of people gave Oni a bad review, including some magazines. There were also many good reviews. The truth is I can't tell you if you'll like it or not, it all depends on your preference. The entire game is interesting. The story is great if you love anime. The weapons are unique and fun, but there is no real depth to the weapon system. That's because you can only have one at a time. Ammo is limited. The best thing in this game is the innocent civilians that beg for heir life when you beat on them. The surroundings are monotonous and bland. That can be changed by using the glassworld code, everything shatters when shot at. The controls aren't beautiful, but can be dealt with after awhile. The codes are fun and add re-play value. After beating the game you might just say it's worth your money, I guess. Multiplayer could've been great. Graphics could've been much better too. If you don't like sports games, then get it.

Hey, ... games? I WANT MY 5 BUCKS BACK! This is just another lame-GITS ... I had no fun playin this at all. First off the graphics are just plain horrible (for the PS2, or any PC), textures are bland and unimaginative, same goes for the blunt 3D-Models. The sound ... too, just a bunch of clicks and booms along with mediocre voice-acting. The music is so rare in the levels that when it does start playing it feels odd and out of place. It's about an enhanced police ... that has a 'mysterious past', ooohh. She's haunted by 'demons of her past'. There's an evil syndicate, and she's out to shut it down. Big deal. The levels make no sense, all you do is run around, ... guys and get lost. No real plot. This in an insult to Masamune Shirow and any Otaku out there. They might as well have called her Motoko instead of Konoko. For shame.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!!, May 26, 2001

Oni is one of the best games you can get for the PS2 right now! The graphics are great, and the fighting system is very cool! There are tons of cool moves that are pretty easy to execute, and lots of cool weapons. The storyline is also really good, and will really pull you into the game. Load times may be a bit long, but that doesn't take away from an otherwise great game. You may have a bit of trouble getting used to the controls at first, but they will soon seem like second nature to you. Casual gamers, hardcore gamers, and anime fans alike will love this game!

3.0 out of 5 stars Original, Not Innovative, November 9, 2004

...is ONI.

You see, I actually borrowed this game from the library for PC, after hearing several bad reviews about it (seeing if they were right, heh). However, after burning it and playing it, I was engulfed in ONI's world...for an hour or so. Then it became difficult, unless you abused the several combos that were built in the game, which made it extremely easy.

But all in all, ONI seems to be a normal adventure game. Sure, you're in a third-person perspective and you fire guns and everything. Maybe the storyline is a little original. ONI would be extraordinary...if it were not for the fact that most games have that "extraordinary" ONI touch. Tch. Skip it, unless you want to be entertained for an hour. Then dump it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oni, April 9, 2003
This review is from: Oni (Video Game)
Oni is such a class game, although the Graphics are a bit [plain] looking but the gameplay is awsome, the Story is class also and so is the plot. I don't usually like PC gaming i usually prefer Consoles. I don't like the PS2 cause i think its a bit over rated just cause its made by sony doesn't mean its the most excellent console in the world but if your into Third Person, Shooters, hand to hand combat games or Anime you'll enjoy this game it kept me going i could play it all night and not get sick of it.

This game is great in its game play. The use of the controls is very interesting. It takes a bit to get used to, but once understood, the movement of the character is fluid and natural. The environments are somewhat drab and lack personality from one another, but having the 360 degree perspective capability is awesome!

4.0 out of 5 stars Oni is a Good Fun Game for the Action Gamer, November 1, 2001

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Oni (Video Game)
It takes a 3rd person perspective similar to Tomb Raider with the camera always following behind you and over your head. The controls start off as complicated for the average PS2 player, but a person used to computer games shouldn't find it too strange with the left analog mapping to the arrow keys and right analog mapping to the mouse for the average computer 1st person shooter.

The combat system is simple with your standard punching and kicking techniques. You'll gain new moves as the game progresses but beyond the basic combos they tend to be difficult to pull off in real combat situations and not worth the effort. The game does an excellent job representing the realism of guns. Fighting two or more armed opponents when you are not armed will inevitably result in death. The computer AI is even smart enough to know that if there's a gun on the ground it's to its advantage to go and pick it up rather than continue fighting hand to hand. Unfortunately, the computer AI has no problem doing suicide attacks with rocket launchers inside of rooms taking away from games realism and making certain fights frustrating.

The levels, while being well designed and sometimes vast, have no eye candy in them. Backgrounds are plain and unexciting. The people move fluidly enough when fighting but no special attention was given to rendering when they are talking with each other during story scenes.

The game also shows some pretty amateur problems. You'll see enemy's arms sticking through walls and you sometimes are even able to hurt the enemies through the wall. Turning properly when close to a wall will often let you see on the other side of it.

The story line is entertaining in the anime cyberpunk motif with some very well done voice acting. I was drawn into it at certain points being angry at characters and wanting to seek revenge. There's even a split point in the story line that will affect the final ending of the game.

Unfortunately, Rockstar took out the multiplayer combat mode of the game in order to get it out on time. This reduces the replay value immensely and there's little incentive to play again after you've beaten both endings to the game.

Overall, it's a fun game to play through and enjoy. It's worth the money if you enjoy the 3rd person beat-up style game. It won't win any awards for pushing the hardware that it's on.
