More About the Author

Dan Birlew is an author and video game expert who has been writing official, published video game strategy guides since 1999. His original career goals included acting and directing. Video games always excited Dan since he was seven years old, but at the age of twenty-six he began honing his playing skills with the goal of becoming an expert gamer. He enjoyed publishing online documents regarding games, known as "FAQs". Dan inadvertently created an online persona for himself when he wrote and self-published on the Internet a plot analysis of the highly popular survival horror video game, Silent Hill. "The game's story was somewhat vague, and demanded that someone try to explain it," says Birlew.

Upon receiving an overwhelming number of positive responses from other Silent Hill fans, and after some gentle nudging from his wife, Birlew decided to set aside his acting and directing activities to establish a career as a video game strategy guide author. He sent writing samples to several publishing companies. Based on the merits of his very first submission, he was hired by a major publisher within 24 hours. Birlew says, "It was as though I had won the lottery."

Birlew has authored over sixty published video game strategy guides and seeks other methods of publication, such as review columns, articles, and other non-fiction video game-related books. Birlew says of his passion for games, "I love exploring video games, the industry, the culture, the fans -- and there is so much of it about which I can analyze and write." He also bears a strong desire to publish fiction, and is currently working on a novel concerning the paranormal.

Dan Birlew is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and has lived in Pennsylvania, Texas, and California. He now resides in Las Vegas with his wife of seventeen years. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993. Besides video games, Birlew also enjoys Japanese films and dining with his family and friends in the restaurants and clubs of Las Vegas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Special Edition!, May 3, 2004

This is an outstanding value. Not only do you get the strategy guide, with a neat all black cover (cool pic of Samanoske and Jacques in Onimusha mode on the back), but you also get a Onimusha art book that contains art from all three games.

The guide is quite good, as it helps you get past those sticky points you may have trouble with in the game. For the extra couple of bucks, I highly recommend the limited edition guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Come for the Strategy Guide, Stay for the Art Book, August 8, 2007
The Onimusha games take a unique twist on the survival horror genre: instead of creepy modern urban locales and gunfights, you play a samurai (and other characters from feudal Japan) battling zombies and other beasts and demons through fantastically detailed castles, underground lairs, temples and mountain hideaways. And, to get the most out of these games, you'll definitely need a strategy guide, as there are some secrets and hidden items you just won't find on your own. BradyGames has always done a great job with their strategy guides, and so I can recommend the strategy guide that comes in this limited edition set without any reservations - go for it!

This set also comes with another book - an art book that displays conceptual art from Onimusha 3 and the two previous games. This book is nice to look at, and there is a good amount of art, but most of it centers on the present game - the art for the other games is less conceptual art and more simply the official character illustrations that can be found in the booklets that come with each game; this is disappointing, but still acceptable. If you like good conceptual art, this is definitely a good one to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome guide for Onimusha 3, December 23, 2009

I originally bought the game because I am a fan of the Series. Part three of the series was kicking my ass though, so I had to get the guide. The guide goes well in depth as far as helping you solve puzzles that are otherwise hard, or in my case i got too frustrated to try and figure out on my own. The guide gives you a step by step instruction on every stage and every puzzle, also gives you great hints on how to defeat bosses. By the way if you haven't bought Onimusha 3 go ahead and buy it. It is a must have and also has great replay value. The intro to the game is by far the best intro I have seen in any game to date!
