Editorial Reviews

Review

"An encyclopedic fun house of information and illustrations teeming with hundreds of entries covering everything from the letter A to Zibby the cartoon squirrel."—Elle

"A tome so replete with knowledge [that it allows readers] to win friends and influence people."—- Entertainment Weekly

"One of the best works that "The Onion" has ever produced...[it] dryly parodies an encyclopedia in the most comprehensive manner imaginable."—- Huffington Post Comedy

"Forget Wikipedia, burn all your books, and snap that Encarta CD Rom in half, because The Onion has just released its BOOK OF KNOWN KNOWLEDGE."—- MSN's The Bubble

"Leave it to the geniuses at The Onion, who have revolutionized the science of sarcasmic infoengineering in the weekly print newspaper format, to do the same for the venerable encyclopedia. Miraculously, in only 250 or so pages, they have managed to cram more meaningful information about our universe into one book than Google or Bing or even Alta Vista have been able to do with several times that number of "web pages"."—Popmatters.com

"Everything you've ever wanted to know about anything."—Huffington Post

"Extremely funny."—Miami Herald

"Long on laughs."—The Economist

"More of what The Onion does best: Make readers collapse in fits of giggles."—Scott Coffman, Louisville Courier-Journal

Wow... The Onion... as usual... leaves no group untouched. If you are easily offended you will NOT be happy with this book! However, if you can see this book for what it is... humor (and a great deal of it very off-color)... you will love it. If you are familiar with the Onion online, then you'll know exactly what to expect. If you buy it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, but be warned... there are no taboos in terms of this book. Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

This compendium is hilarious! Entries on historical events and persons, current ones, random words and phrases. Pick it up and start reading anywhere. I guarantee that if you like satire and parody you will grin, giggle or occasionally roll on the floor chortling.

I was looking for coffee table books for my new apartment and came across this book while browsing Amazon's huge collection of hardcover books. The Onion Book of Known Knowledge is absolutely hilarious. There is an entry for almost anything you can think of from "crumbs" to "Steve Jobs" to "jupiter." Each entry is funnier than the next and all are well-written. The book has been an outstanding conversation starter and is a favorite amongst our friends and family.

Bottom line, everyone should have this book.

Some of this is really enjoyable, dry wit. Some of it is so ridiculous that it is funny. Some of it is just potty humor, so it may appeal to a wide range of people. Don't leave it lying around where any of your sensitive friends or relatives can get hold of it, unless you want to offend them so much that they will never visit you again. Still, if you need a laugh, this book can provide it. Much of it is insulting to the reader and gives you a chance to laugh at yourself. I've enjoyed seeing some of the twisted stuff compiled in this book. It has been good for some laughs.

You know what top expect from The Onion and this delivers. Like their other books it's surprisingly detailed & very funny. It also has a huge number of entries and a wide range of wit. It's not as good as Our Dumb Century (Running Press Miniature Editions) but is still extremely funny.

The entries all have a mixture of real / made up but serious sounding info, & then the comedy rolls in. If you go for surreal wit, then I recommend the hilarious Sherlock Holmes and the Flying Zombie Death Monkeys. A B movie in a book, it includes a man who can play the piano with his balls. Priceless.

Just letting people know that the paperback edition has been revised and updated, unannounced. Aside from the snazzy new cover, the Eisenhower entry that was missing from the hardcover edition has been added, the Lance Armstrong entry was completely rewritten, the Pope entry was updated to reflect the new pope, and death dates were added for Neil Armstrong and Andy Griffith. There may be other changes as well, but I haven't found them yet. If you're deciding which version to get, or whether to repurchase, definitely go with the updated paperback.

I am a fan of understated humor, overstated humor, subtle humor, humor in general, and sarcasm-however-I will warn the overly sensitive by stating that some of the material can be offensive. Don't leave it around for the kiddies. Must be a fan of great wits such as Mark Twain or towering intellectuals like Don Rickles and Sponge Bob Squarepants. Proceed at your own risk.

Well, to be honest I was going to give this to my brother-in-law for Christmas until my sister said, "Oh he might like it, I don't know." That's when I thought, "Oh well the hell with him, I KNOW I will like/love it" so, it stayed home with me. I have been reading the Onion for quite a while and I love the absurdity of it all. I read it before bedtime for a good laugh. I can't wait until my son gets old enough to read it. No one in my immediate circle of friends understand why I love this so much. Maybe time for new friends?!? Anyway, if you enjoy a good laugh get this book it's a very good read.
