This mini system looks and sounds great, and boasts some handy technology to cue your tunes with the minimum of fuss. Built-in Bluetooth allows wireless streaming from smart phone, tablet, or personal computer. Plug in an iPod, iPhone, or iPad to the front-panel USB port and use the system remote for track selection and playback. Cutting no corners, the system includes a front-loading drawer-type CD player- no more scratched discs- and an FM tuner with 30-station preset memory. Now that there's no shortage of music to play, you need a system that can handle it. And this small, stylish system is it.
Much of the Colibrino's appeal lies in its understated design and tasteful finish. Available in black, red or white, the system will enhance the ambience of your living space and inspire you to discover the hidden depths in your music collection.
Bluetooth Streaming at the Touch of a Button
Whether you're an iPhone or iPad user, an Android fan, or an owner of a compatible mobile device with Bluetooth capability, streaming music through your CS-355 couldn't be easier. Just pair the devices and select the track, playlist, or album of your choice. With aptX® codec and the improved data transfer capabilities of Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, you'll be delighted with remarkably clear and faithful sound reproduction.
Front Panel USB Port for iPod/iPhone/iPad and Flash Memory Devices
The cleanest your iPod music can sound! The CS-355's front-panel USB port lets you play MP3 and AAC stored in an iPod/iPhone, and MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC audio files stored on a flash-memory device, using the system's own remote for track selection and playback. Your music will also sound much cleaner and clearer, as the audio signal is transported in digital rather than analog form through the direct digital connection.
Digital Music Files Sound GREAT.
The CS-355 employs digital amplifier circuitry to extract a noise-free signal from digital audio sources. Whether it's on a standard CD or in a compressed MP3 file stored on CD or USB, or music streamed from your mobile device, your music will sound clearer than ever. Because digital amplifiers can convert power with very high levels of efficiency, much less energy is wasted as heat, and the amplifier design can be smaller and lighter. Hence, the CS-355 can provide room-filling power that belies its modest size.
Optimal Speakers & Active Bass Control
Two big 10 cm cone woofers drive a deep, clear mid-range, while a pair of balanced-dome tweeters pick out and enhance the details. The rounded cabinets have subtly angled sides to prevent internal standing waves and the boomy sound that can result.
At quiet volume levels, human hearing becomes less sensitive to sounds at the upper and lower ends of the audible spectrum. To compensate for the perceived loss of bass sounds at lower volumes, the CS-355 incorporates Onkyo's proprietary Active Bass Control. This function maintains an optimal balance of low-frequency sounds by making automatic, real-time adjustments in line with the playback volume. You enjoy smooth and natural-sounding bass at any volume level.

The first thing I noticed when I unpacked it was the lack of controls on the front panel. All you will see looking from the front is the display, a USB connector, headphone jack and eject button for the CD. It has a very clean look. On the top, it has Power, Pairing, Input, forward/back skip, play/pause and volume buttons. On the back panel, it has AM/FM antenna antenna inputs, line in for connecting a TV or any other device via RCA cables (not included), a subwoofer out jack, speaker outputs and an AC input receptacle for the power cord. The unit comes supplied with AC cable, speaker wires, AM & FM antennas and a remote. The unit was packed very well by Onkyo with the speakers in the bottom with the receiver unit up top in a double box.
Upon setting it up, a few things stood out. I don't usually like spring mounted speaker wire connections but the spring tension on these was very good. The speaker wires are very short at just over 3 feet but they are good quality wire for a bookshelf system. The speakers are in plastic enclosures so they have a boxy sound to them. Don't expect a lot of bass and the bass you get is boomy. The speakers are of a 2-Way vented design with a 4" woofer, 1" tweeter and a front port. In my opinion, the sound was muffled with the bass and treble set to flat. I got the best sound with the Treble at +3, the Bass at 0 and the Super Bass at 1. For some music the Super Bass sounded better at 2 but only at low volumes. I connected a small subwoofer to the rear output and that made a big difference in the overall sound.Read more ›
Before I received this unit, I already owned an older Onkyo system called the Onkyo CS-445 CD Receiver System and was very happy with it. That unit has excellent sound, very large speakers, but no bluetooth capabilities.
When I got this unit, I disconnected my old system and put this one in its place on my desk. The speakers on this unit are much smaller than the CS-445, which is a plus and a minus. On the plus side, the speakers on the CS-445 were really too large, and these are much more consistent with the size that I would expect from a desktop stereo system. The downside is that the speakers on this system do not produce anywhere near the quality of the sound that the CS-445 does. This unit also has a lower overall wattage, which is consistent with the smaller speakers and lower quality sound.
The bluetooth paired just fine with my Android phone and the music sounded great. Bear in mind that Bluetooth uses 2.4 Ghz, which is the same frequency that is used by most consumer Wifi systems and some cordless phones. So, if you have this in the same room as your Wifi transmitter, you're likely to see a very limited bluetooth range and possibly some interference with your Wifi system as well.
Overall, I like this unit, but I have real trouble justifying the price. This unit cost $329.00. The CS-445 sells on Amazon.com for $204.97. The CS-445 produces far better sound than this unit.Read more ›
I'm also pleased to get a nice connection for my iOS devices via the front face USB port. With my iPhone 5's Lightning charging cable, the system showed up as a dock connector and I was able to play music, with excellent quality, while charging. FM reception is surprisingly good using only the included indoor antenna wire, better than I've ever gotten in my home.
What wasn't excellent, in fact was atrocious, was connecting via Bluetooth. Lots of pops and drop outs even when only 8 feet away, nothing comparable to the direct wired connection or an Airplay WiFi connection on another device. Of course, this may well be a problem with Apple's Bluetooth implementation and you may have better luck with another vendor. [Update: the sound is fine with a Kindle Fire HD over Bluetooth, although I'm hearing or imagining a slight loss of quality due to the necessary data compression. So it might be an Apple only problem.]
Setup was quick, although I'd have preferred another foot of stereo cable. The remote is overly complicated, with many small hard to distinguish buttons, not something usable in the dark. It seems like the speakers have to be brought away from the wall for the best sound, a half foot or so of air makes a noticeable difference.Read more ›
